This is definitely a good sign, sounds like we were losing rich text selection before.

Tests the fix from PR #75371 by verifying that when navigating from a pattern block via "Edit original" to the pattern entity, then clicking "Back" to return to the post, the pattern block selection is correctly restored. Co-Authored-By: Claude Haiku 4.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

This is working better than #75193, good progress! There are still a few hiccups in the behaviour though.
- If I click through to a synced pattern from the page editor (in the site editor), then click back, the pattern is correctly selected. However, if I then go out to the pages list and then click back into that page, the pattern is still selected which I wouldn't expect.
- In the template editor, I can't reproduce the above behaviour but there's some different weirdness: clicking into a synced pattern and back does select it correctly the first time, but if I subsequently click back into the same pattern and back it doesn't always reselect it. I find it fails consistently if I selected other blocks in the template before clicking back into the pattern. This behaviour seems unique to templates, I can't repro it on pages or posts.
- Also in the template editor, reloading the page after the URL has
&selectedBlock=6f034979-c16b-4696-bd70-214440dc25e2added to it causes the editor to crash withError: The entity being edited (postType, wp_template) does not have a loaded config.. This also seems unique to templates, I can't repro it in pages.

It looks like we're not waiting for the resolution, so should we dispatch the resolver in the background? The new hasEntityRecord might be a better fit here.

I wondered the same, we can update editEntityRecord action to wait for the resolution but it would be a bigger change. It switches from sync to unsync action and I'm not sure about side effects of that change. We may want to try it elsewhere though since it's a "hidden" bug.
That said, it won't help here because the clientIds are not persistent so it won't do anything anyway.

Personally I only reproduced this in the template editor and not the page editor haha. But it's fixed now. Clearing the selection happens now when moving from edit to view mode which is more correct that what we had before (when switching rendering modes)
I have been unable to reproduce this personally. My guess is that there's potentially an issue in some other block that steals focus or something.
This should be fixed as well. We can't select the right block on reload though because the client Ids don't persist in the database but I think it's an ok tradeoff. |
The onChange/onInput callbacks from useBlockSync pass a second argument with selection state to maintain backward compatibility with consumers like useEntityBlockEditor. Move BlockSyncEffect inside SelectionContext.Provider so root useBlockSync reads selection from context correctly. Only call restoreSelection() when blocks are reset from an external source (undo/entity navigation) to avoid breaking the isUpdatingSameBlockAttribute chain. Remove the editPost call that cleared entity selection from setRenderingMode, which was wiping the selection needed for cross-navigation restoration. Pass selection state alongside block changes in the subscription's onChange/onInput calls, matching the original architecture. Extract selection from options in useEntityBlockEditor and include it in entity edits so undo levels capture the correct cursor position. When blocks change, updateParent (onInput/onChange) already passes selection to the entity. The separate onChangeSelection call was redundantly dispatching a second editEntityRecord action on every keystroke, causing an extra re-render and performance regression in the "type" metric. Only call onChangeSelection for pure selection movements (e.g. clicking a different block) where no block content changed. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
After undo, the block is correctly selected in the store (toolbar, inspector, and is-selected class all confirm this) but DOM focus doesn't transfer because useFocusFirstElement's effect dependencies (initialPosition, clientId) don't change when the same block was already selected before undo. Replace the `selection` value in SelectionContext with a stable `getSelection` getter function. This prevents the entire block tree (including async-rendered off-screen blocks) from re-rendering on every keystroke, since the context value no longer changes when selection updates. It's a big patch I don't 100% follow, but didn't notice anything suspicious.
Store onChangeSelection in a ref alongside selection, making the context value fully stable (empty useMemo deps). This eliminates subtree re-renders when onChangeSelection changes, and lets useBlockSync call onChangeSelection directly without its own ref. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>

The filter excluding onNavigateToEntityRecord from the spread and the explicit re-assignment are no longer needed. After PR #75371 removed the wrapping logic, onNavigateToEntityRecord now passes through directly. Since it's in the BLOCK_EDITOR_SETTINGS allowlist, it's already included via the Object.fromEntries spread. Co-Authored-By: Claude Haiku 4.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

What?
Fix selection restoration during entity navigation (e.g., clicking "Edit original" on a pattern block and navigating back).
Why?
When navigating between entities in template-locked mode, the selected block was not being restored correctly. The issue had two root causes:
setRenderingModeunconditionally cleared entity selection during rendering mode changesRESET_BLOCKSunconditionally clearedcontrolledInnerBlocksflags, causing a cascade re-clone of nested controllers with stale selection IDsHow?
Three interconnected fixes:
packages/editor/src/store/actions.js:setRenderingModenow only clears block editor selection when the mode actually changes (addedmode !== getRenderingMode()guard), preventing unnecessary selection clearing.packages/block-editor/src/store/reducer.js:RESET_BLOCKSnow preservescontrolledInnerBlocksentries for blocks that still exist, preventing the cascade re-clone of nested controllers like post-content and patterns.packages/block-editor/src/components/provider/use-block-sync.js: AddedrestoreSelection()call insidesetControlledBlocks()withappliedSelectionRefreset, ensuring selection is updated to use fresh internal IDs if blocks are re-cloned.Testing Instructions
