Thanks for including the videos, they're very helpful :) My expectation was that clicking a selected item would open a picker where the user could replace just that item, not the entire selection. The other per-row tools (remove/re-order) only affect that item so this behavior tripped me up slightly. I do understand why this approach might be better if there are a lot of items in the selection though—it's easier to quickly replace the entire selection. I'd welcome thoughts from @WordPress/gutenberg-design on that. The upload animations appear to be a little clunky. The spinner works well as a placeholder, but there's a split second where the placeholder/spinner disappears, the content reflows, and then the full thumbnail/row appears. Is there any way to tidy that up? |

I could try out to update a single item and have the full selection when clicking the placeholder (choose files).
Not sure how easy this could be because while we're uploading we haven't created the attachment yet. I'll try to figure out if there is a way to handle this more gracefully. |

There might be, yes. Additionally I've been trying for a while today to see how I could make the upload issues smooth to avoid any re-render at all if possible and it's quite challenging. @jameskoster do you think we can focus on the moving functionality/design in this PR and address your comment in two follow ups, since they are existing behavior already? |

Agree with @jameskoster that choosing one item to replace it follows clearer heuristics. I see value in replacing items added through a multi-selection process, but in that case, I would suggest having a container dropzone that wraps all items with a different interaction to delete them. In short
Regarding sorting items, nothing to add. It looks great ✨ The upload popover in #73085 @jasmussen mentions is more for keeping an eye on. It doesn’t work as a dropping zone or to interact with uploaded items. Not sure what level of sync between the implementations need to exist, but it’s open to suggestions. |

@jameskoster @fcoveram I've updated the code to replace items individually. I'd appreciate some design feedback or an approval for the design part. There is a small nuance though that is also visible in Gallery block. When you have multiple files selected (example

I suppose the question is whether it can ever be valid to have the same record listed twice. I can't really think of one, so tend to agree the way you've implemented it here makes more sense when compared to the Gallery block. |

Since the function returns early if ! multiple, is there still the possibility that selectedMedia is not an array?

Yes, there is. When multiple (passed down to the control) is true but we click an existing item, we open the picker in single-selection mode (check this line). Then this is handled in the last else if ( selectedMedia.id !== targetItemId ) { block, and in that case even if the original multiple value is -true the selectedMedia is not an array.

What?
This PR does a few things which mostly affect the
multiplevariation:useMovingAnimationwhich makes the reorder smoother.Regarding the second point above (Implements ordering support on media selection and on dropping files. ) it's important to mention how the media pickers work right now when multiple files are supported. When we open the picker, all existing values (attachments) are selected and we can either select more items and/or deselect items.

Since we don't currently use the expanded or multiple versions in core yet, I've include some testing code in this commit that makes testing easier by adding some new fields with
post metain site editorsquick editof pages. This code will be removed before merging.Make sure not to review the changes from this commit except maybe for the registration of post meta, to check whether I might be making wrong assumptions about how consumers implement such fields (for example the schema etc..).
