This is testing great for me, even on a really large post (in this case the entire contents of Dracula). There is a noticeable delay for me on a really big changeset in clicking through the revisions (and slower than when "show changes" is switched off), but once selected it's quite quick to scroll up and down within the revision:

Not for this PR, but I wonder if there's a way to apply any of the logic progressively (or optimistically) when dragging between revisions, to speed things up on larger posts? I.e. somehow calling diffRawBlocks iteratively in chunks, or over multiple cycles / frames instead of synchronously? I have no idea how this would actually work, though, and not a blocker, of course, especially as this feature can be toggled off.
The only other tiny thing I noticed is an extra scrollbar that appears to be present when the highlighted changes go off the edge of the viewport (I've set my OS to always show scrollbars):
For diffs that aren't that tall, it doesn't appear:
Overall, I think this will be great to land, as it very much improves navigating changes on larger documents, as well as providing the visual changes. Nice work! 🚀

Is there a risk on extremely long-lived posts or pages that there could be a very high level of revisions? (The per_page: -1 here jumped out at me). This might be an edge case, but I'm thinking of a 10+ year old site with a home page that gets updated daily or something.
Again, maybe not something to worry about right now, just thought I'd mention it.

Yes, performance is definitely something we should keep in mind and follow up on. The revisions selector could use some love as well and could benefit from the same level of optimization as getEntityRecord(s). This is on my to-do list, and I will try to get around to it sooner rather than later.
Maybe with the suggested new design, we could also paginate the results; there's no need to display all revisions, maybe just the latest 10/20 for starters. See #74742 (comment).

Thanks for the ping. I'm not sure the best path forward. I see a functional PR here, which moves things forward, and I've proposed based on work by @mattmiklic an adjacent exploration that is nevertheless taking things in a slightly different direction, that may not be possible to ship in a short amount of time. And because I genuinely appreciate Ella's work here, I want to be careful in how I frame this.
The other direction I'm proposing shows revisions in the inspector, with an option to paginate at the bottom. This is how it is solved for global style revisions as well. I do think of that as an option. But I also don't want to block this PR from landing. There may be some things emerging orcanically as we actually use this feature in day to day, which surfaces shortcomings in the approach I showed.
I mostly hope that the code here is nice, simple, and modular, so if we do have to change directions, we can.

@jasmussen Rest assured, we can totally switch directions if we need to, we're not setting the direction in stone and it's simple to change 🙂
@andrewserong Yes, I'll create a follow-up PR to get rid of the unbound request 🙂 The initial PR actually had some optimizations but the revisions entities were not quite ready for it so we'll have to make some improvements there.

Not for this PR, but looking at the changes here, and that parseRawBlock needs to be exposed from the blocks package, it nearly makes me wonder if the diffing logic should be more general purpose than being contained in the editor package? No need to move things around now, but I could imagine folks wanting to re-use this one day in other contexts, too.

Why?
Rather than just showing the selected revision, it's useful to the a visual difference between it and the previous revision. The diff can be toggled off so you can see purely the content.
The in-canvas colors are mixed with the currentColor so that it looks good for all themes.
How?
The first stage does a quick grammar parse and uses a combination of
diffArraysanddiffWordsto track whether blocks have been added, removed, or modified.The second stage then properly parses the merged block tree and add rich text diffing to the modified blocks only.
