I've started going thru features that don't feel ready for 7.2 and pushing them to the 7.3 tracking issue ahead of Beta 1. We can continue working on bugs thru the remainder of the 7.2 cycle.

    👋 UX/Design question

Latest v2 (live) version of the Note emojis seems 'worse' than what we had before. Why do we need text pulled out next to the emojis? Can't it be on hover as a tooltip as on most modern platforms or apps? It seems very weird.

It also covers much more space behind it, meaning messages most likely become non-visible when I want to leave reaction. And I am a weird reader. If I see a message that I like, I re-read it. And while I am pressing emoji and want to leave ❤️, I might want to read it in that very moment too.

Is there a way where we fix this somehow?

Note that I didn't have time to go through each of above fixes, but would love to be linked to decision to comment there instead.

    Thank you!

    Notes - progress update (2026-10-20)

Short update as we shipped 7.2 Beta 1. The previous update is at #80015 (comment).

    We shipped the following features:

    • Floating notes now live in a canvas margin, scroll with the canvas and show even when the sidebar is open
    • New Emoji reactions on notes
    • A new "Add note" block toolbar button
    • Notes highlight and connect to content better

    Claude assembled additional details:

    Merged since the last update

    Suggestion mode

The stack (#80427 through #80433, #82047, #82048) is still open and has picked up architecture reviews and publisher feedback in the mean time. Combined branch for testing: https://playground.wordpress.net/gutenberg.html?pr=78994

Still in progress, may be moving to 7.3

    Moved to 7.3

Features that are not ready are moved to the 7.3 tracking issue - #83892: Suggestion mode, notes on templates and the Style Book, thread followers and notifications, reviewer notes on previews, the RTC orphaned-note fix, and discussions outside the editor. Bug fixes keep going for the rest of the 7.2 cycle.

Reviews on the "still in flight" list are the most useful help right now. Anything missing or mis-sorted above?

    #81951 and #85120 - unseen-activity dot on the toggle and per-thread, for #81940 and #81949.

I think we should also move these to 7.3. It requires a new system to track seen/unseen entries; I don't like rushing it.

I'll check others more closely later this week and punt as needed.
