This week several improvements to the block landed in the Waveform player. This is great as it means we need less code in Gutenberg to adapt it to our needs. The main things still left to do are captured in these PRs:
Hello, I'm catching up on this after some AFK. I took the current version of the block for a spin—GIF—and honestly I think it's looking good enough to merge for beta and move out of experimental, so I'm echoing Aki's question above, are those waveform playback controls required for stabilisation? I think it's fine to ship the block as is, then add those controls in 7.2 if need be. It's a really cool block, nice work.
There's one thing I'd love to have fixed as a bug not yet tracked: if I drag multiple MP3s onto the playlist block, they all get uploaded, but only a single one gets added to the playlist. I'd expect them all to be added.
All of these items have now been shipped. We're also looking at removing the caption from the block, but I think we can consider this iteration complete.
We're also looking at removing the caption from the block
It was decided in #80335 to keep the Caption functionality because the playlist block is a <figure/> element. So, I think we're definitely good to close this! Thanks for all your work @scruffian!

This week we've been working on:

We are adding new icons for this block too: #78987
scruffian commentedon Jun 26, 2026
This week we merged the new icons (#78987) and updated Playlist Block: Add waveform playback controls with the new icons. We also continued to iterate on the hover timestamps and seeking behaviour (#78916 and #78980).
We also discovered a couple of other issues with the block which will require fixes at the framework level:
These issues, along with the uncertainty about the design in #78916 means that I think this block is unlikely to ship in 7.1.

Thanks for working on this.
Since these are bug fixes, I believe we can address them after the 7.1 Beta1 release.
Is this a required enhancement to stabilize the block?

This week we've been continuing to get the block ready for Beta 1 with the following fixes and enhancements
Not all of these need to be merge before stabilising the block, which we'll do early next week. Kudos to @jeryj for all his recent work on this block.

Things still to do for playlist block:
Let's leave these for 7.2
I think this will leave us in a good place to stabilise the block

I created this issue for showing an odd interaction during the adding tracks flow.
Not sure if it's doable for 7.1, but sharing it here for visibility.

We're hoping to land these PRs before the Beta 1 cut-off
Bug fixes will follow after the cut-off:
