What happened?

I have been seeing this issue for a while even with the newer test builds.

After running a VM for several days straight with active processing, the machine ends up with a blank screen.
Data is constantly being written to a shared folder, and I have noticed when it happened earlier, that the data was still being written to the shared folder, while the machine was in an inaccessible state due to the lost visuals.
This time the the program, which was writing to the shared folder also logged an error.

Things to highlight:

  • The host system never goes to sleep or has its screens turned off (notebook display as primary + external display)
  • The guest system has "Never" configured in Power & Sleep Screen settings when it is not running from battery ("When plugged in, turn off after" is set to "Never", but only this option, not the first)
  • The screen gets resized to a smaller size (perhaps 1024x768) and goes blank
  • It did happen, that when the screen turned blank this way, the machine was still working as expected by continuously writing data to a file from a shared folder
  • There is no network connectivity enabled (adapter not connected) for the guest, it is offline all the time
  • The guest is started from an offline snapshot taken recently, in this particular case right before the VBox.log was created
  • The guest is allocated on the external, secondary display at all times
  • When the event happens, the guest machine is either in the background or its window is minimized to the tray

VBox.log
VBoxHardening.log

How can we reproduce this?

Not sure, also not sure whether it is related to other bug reports.

Did you upload all of your necessary log files, screenshots, etc.?

  • Yes, I've uploaded all pertinent files to this issue.
