What happened?

I installed Windows update KB5066793 and also updated VirtualBox from 7.2.2 to 7.2.4 at the same time, then after the reboot I was no longer able to run any of my VMs. The VirtualBox Manager runs fine, but attempting to run any of my VMs causes VirtualBoxVM.exe to crash with an 0xc0000005 exception. Crash dump attached from VirtualBox 7.2.4:

VirtualBoxVM.exe.9304.dmp.zip

The crash seems to happen immediately. There is no VBox.log created. An example VBoxHardening.log is attached:

VBoxHardening_Fail.log

Apart from it ending rather too soon, there is no obvious difference from a successful boot:

VBoxHardening_OK.log

When I uninstall KB5066793, I can start any VM again as normal. I can repeatedly install and uninstall KB5066793 and the failure always occurs with KB5066793 installed and does not occur without it installed.

I downgraded back to VirtualBox 7.2.2 and the same happened.

How can we reproduce this?

Install KB5066793 on the above specified Windows version and check if you can run any VM from VirtualBox Manager.

Did you upload all of your necessary log files, screenshots, etc.?

  • Yes, I've uploaded all pertinent files to this issue.
