We need to decide what to do when someone accidentally creates a ref containing a dot (.).
This is not supported and will result in isues with the tracer.

• Should we auto-remove dots from refs in the tracer?
• Should we auto-convert dots in refs in the tracer?
• Should we throw an error when dots are encountered?
