Some software has native windows rocm support, for example, lmstudio(llama.cpp) and blender. I've tried them under windows.

Ok thanks for the explanation, I thought rocm was only for linux and WSL didnt know you could use it in windows.

I have setup 7900xtx with Ubuntu 22.04, not sure 24.04 but you probably can do it.

Sorry for the delay! I'm speaking with internal teams and will hopefully have an update regarding this, but will probably not be able to give any timelines regardless.

I can see there is a pull request for the gfx1101 to be added to Pytorch for Linux: pytorch/pytorch#141667

I wouldn't read too much into individual PRs, they often don't reflect the full picture.

Unfortunately, while extending official hardware support is definitely on our radar, I'm unable to provide any updates/commitments at this time regarding the 7800XT and other gfx1101 cards. We understand this is a need for many users, and I will update here when I'm able to provide more information.

@schung-amd hope we get confirmation soon, as you didn't deny 😄 so i hope maybe with ROCM 7x announcement (as usually with every year a big release is announced and last time we got announcement for ROCM 6 was around this time of the year) so hope we soon will get the confirmation. So high hopes 🙏

Can you tell us the process of sitting up for Windows?

The Adrenalin driver releases will not add hardware support on their own, this will be enabled through a WSL-compatible ROCm version release. That being said, I understand the frustration, and hopefully in the future our hardware support will be more comprehensive than it is now. Mainline ROCm hardware support is already quite limited, and our WSL support in its current state is even more restrictive. This should improve moving forward, but I understand that it is certainly not where users would like it to be right now.

If you are using pure linux rather than wsl like me, it is all ok to use team red. But if you want to use wsl, navi31 core is the only choice for amd.

Fedora's version of rocm has more devices supported. If you want to save time, just use fedora.

True, but actual official support (and BLAS tuning etc) would be nice too.

Extending hardware support (on both Linux and Windows) is a priority for us at the moment, but unfortunately there is still no information I can share regarding any specific GPUs.

It get an "amd gpu detected" so I believe so, I am using a 9070 xt. I made this ridiculous assumption that if someone got the 7800xt working than the 9070xt will also work as they are both introduced in the amd rocm 6.4.1 beta(linux only atm and released yesterday).

@chrisconcepcion I'd say try to run some matrix multiplications in pytorch on the GPU because the wheels are built against the 7800 xt, see ROCm/TheRock#651 (comment). If it doesn't work, you can go through the process of building the wheels yourself

I'm really curious why they announce 7800xt official support after the code has actually supported it for such a long time.....

Official support means not only enablement in code but a commitment to resolving issues and providing tuned kernels for those GPUs. As of ROCm 6.4.1 the 7800xt is now officially supported in native Linux as well as in WSL. Any issues encountered on native Linux or WSL with the 7800XT can be submitted as new issues or added to this discussion, which I will leave open for now.

Thanks for checking this. I have indeed tried installing it, as I actually also read at a glance it was supported in that matrix. But then I ran into an issue, came back to the installation guide, and saw the footnote "[7]" at the end of the row of the RX 7800 XT

saying implicitly that Debian is actually not supported:

[7] (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17) AMD Radeon PRO ( AI PRO R9700, PRO W7900 Dual Slot, PRO W7900, PRO W7800 48GB, PRO W7800, PRO W7700, PRO W6800) and AMD Radeon (RX 9070 XT, RX 9070 GRE, RX 9070, RX 9060 XT, RX 9060, RX 7900 XTX, RX 7900 XT, RX 7900 GRE, RX 7800 XT, and RX 7700 XT) are supported only on Ubuntu 24.04.3, Ubuntu 22.04.5, RHEL 10.0, and RHEL 9.6.

This further confirmed by the supported distributions table below, which also adds a footnote behind the checkmark for Debian 13. It says:

[13] Debian 13 is supported only on AMD Instinct MI300X GPU.

Is this up to date? Because if not, I should probably make an open issue, rather than contributing to a closed issue :-)

Interesting, I missed those footnotes. I suspect it should work but we just haven't added testing yet. I'll look into it and update if this really isn't supported.

From the errors you've run into, that just looks like Debian has updated the versions of mariadb and libpq5 and are no longer providing the older versions. You might be able to work around this by installing those yourself first, but otherwise the rocm Debian package needs to be updated to pull the newer versions (or the older versions from another source if necessary). I expect this would also be an issue on MI300. It wouldn't hurt to open a new issue on this to get more visibility.

Yeah, the presence of those footnotes in the rows should be made much clearer (with a ⚠️ for example), because it's not a minor detail. Some customers that specifically search for ROCm compatible GPUs could find that even misleading.

I will double-check whether an issue has already been created on the outdated packages and create one otherwise. Hopefully, those packages will just be added to the rocm package, indeed. Personally, I rather not temper with my system to check if it might work, unless it has been tested. I try to keep it as stable as possible, as I run into enough issues with the PC build already 🙃

TheRock is a nice alternative I'll keep an eye on, in case Debian 13 won't get support, since the other project shared earlier doesn't list Debian. Thanks for the suggestion!

Regarding the question on support, if it's not available now (as reflected by the setup guide), I'm more interested in "will Debian 13 get support?" and if possible "[...] somewhere in the upcoming months / quartile / year". Looking forward to hearing from you!

I'll have to double check on that and get back to you. Things are a little messy at the moment as we're evolving our build system for mainline ROCm releases, and I'm not sure if this will also change what we state in the compatibility matrix.

I will note that the mainline ROCm release compatibility matrix is more of an indicator of what configurations we provide rigorous testing and quality guarantees for; for a looser definition of support (i.e. builds and works) Debian 13 may well be supported already. Of course, I'll still check internally for plans and timelines surrounding Debian 13 as you may want the stricter mainline definition of support.

Good idea with adding a warning. I'll check in with the docs team and see if we can raise visibility on the MI300-only nature of Debian 13 support in the matrix because the current presentation does seem a bit misleading to me.
