The chart this coming week is set to start earlier than normal - 3pm rather than 4pm which is presumably down to it being the Christmas chart.

Which is weird, because with all the highly-streamed oldies (and American songs that Brits only started listening to in large numbers once they outsourced choosing songs to Spotify and Amazon playlists), the Christmas chart is the least-interesting of the year, and contains the fewest core Radio 1 songs. Last Christmas is already number 1 a fortnight before Christmas.

Friday's schedule also shows Greg James finishing at 10:00, with the half-hour anthems 10:00–10:30 presented by Dean McCullough.

Dean is in for Greg for the whole show I imagine.

    He's got flu now

Mylo and Rosie on early breakfast Mon-Wed
Thursday Joel.Mitchell guess planned as Dean doesn't normally do Fridays

Not a regular listeniner, Radio 1 is really rap heavy. Play some good stuff still that you wouldn't get on Capital.

Dean is supposed to be presenting breakfast on Thursday and Friday (which is why Joel is presenting on Thursday),. I would assume Sam and Danni will be if he’s unwell

Don’t think he was ever down for Thursday - schedule never said Greg was off that day.

Yeah Greg said today that Wednesday is his last day until Christmas Day. So I’m assuming Joel being in for Dean was because he’s meant to be in for Greg

Sam and Danni are now down to do Breakfast on Friday with Lauren Layfield and Conor Knight covering Sam and Danni in the afternoon, nothing on Thursday's listing but assume it's also Sam and Danni.

Not sure as to why, but R1Dance will be doing its own stuff on Boxing Day Night, so instead of Danny Howard and Sarah Story, it'll be January Winters (2FM) and Helena Star (recently on the Nightingale Pioneers)

January has posted on Instagram to say she'll do a mix, so it does sound like neither will be just a generic playlist programme.

imagine how disappointing you finally get accepted to this and you find yourself on Radio 1 Anthems

I know it's a little bit of a demotion from what would be massive exposure. However after a few years of testing potential newbies on the main station it makes sense to use Anthems as it's there now. Plus it also allows the permanent newbies a chance to shine such as Mylo & Rose, Joel Mitchell etc.

Maybe it helps with listener familiarity, too. I wonder how RAJARs for the last few festive seasons have been for Radio 1 -- was there a dip because of the unknown voices?

The Dutch do a similar approach -- NPO 3FM used to have a digital spin-off focused on new radio talent, but it seems to have been integrated into a broader channel called NPO Campus.

Rajar don't monitor listening over Christmas and New Year.

    Ah, fair point.

As it was probably short notice I Wonder if Mylo & Rosie did the shows in Manchester or maybe a BBC studio in Yorkshire

They did it from Salford, as that is where Dean usually does his show from
