The link below includes the first 2 hours of the original live CNN broadcast - including Peter Arnett reporting live on his mobile phone from his hotel in Baghdad as he watched bombs starting to go off all around him.

It must be one of the most dramatic pieces of TV news journalism of all time.

Also watch out in the last few minutes for a (comparatively) young Wolf Blitzer at the Pentagon telling us not to be alarmed at the by then total loss of communication with Arnett and everyone in Baghdad.

RIP Peter. From the days CNN wasn't the cluttered up mess it is today.

I was away working in Turkey when all that happened. Added to the tension for me

He wasn't using a mobile phone, it was something called a 4 Wire, which were dedicated landlines used back then by broadcasters for remote Talkback. It was remarkable that CNN had even managed to set up such a thing under the circumstances

I believe he was also one of the very few western journalists who stayed on in Saigon after the North Vietnamese army captured the city in 1975 when every other one was getting the hell out of the country.
