August 17 1974 YTV were covering Golf for World Of Sport as they were for the first 3 days but there was racing from Ripon on World Of Sport on that day so Thames covered the Racing at Ripon for World Of Sport given that Thames were able to send their OB units to Ripon as they were usually unlikely to be used at weekends as Tyne Tees were not available as they were covering Newcastle v Coventry and this meant that ATV's Stoke v Leeds was covered on Yorkshire and ATV also covered racing at Wolverhampton on World Of Sport
That Arsenal match was on Danny Baker's Right Hammerings video, I remember Dan pointing out how furious Brian Kidd was at the disallowed goals - "he must really hate West Ham!"
That must be Northampton's finest ever televised moment, and nice to see them scoring six when one of their few other appearances on that programme was letting in eight to Man U.
Interesting to think about what clubs have appeared on this programme both being thrashed and doing the thrashing. Bristol Rovers must hold some kind of record for the joint highest number of goals conceded on Match of the Day when they let in nine against Spurs and the joint highest number of goals scored on The Big Match when they put eight past Brighton.
Spurs, of course, suffered their own thrashing in front of the TV cameras the season after that when they lost 7-0 at Liverpool on Granada. Man United’s 6-0 defeat at Ipswich in 1980 must make them one of the few sides to have won and lost games shown on ITV in the 1968-83 period by six goals or more, following the 8-2 win at Northampton a decade earlier as mentioned above.
This week’s episode might well have set the record for the most first-half goals on The Big Match, including the six at Northampton. The second half of that game was presumably a real anti-climax, with Bournemouth probably just glad that the score didn’t get closer to double figures.

I remember that Ipswich game, think Uniteds team was weakened by injuries which may partially explain the loss. They were second or third in the table if I remember correctly. Interesting fact that Bailey saved three penalties, so the scoreline could have been 9-0. United got revenge on them 15 years later with a 9-0 drubbing at Old Trafford.
My choice would have been for Kidd’s goal at Norwich. When I look back to some of the goals that won goal of the season in those days ( including those on MOTD), they probably would not even have made the short list for goal of the week most weeks nowadays. The game has indeed moved on, and they could only choose from games where the cameras were there, of course.
Digiguide are listing repeats of the 1976/77 season in the first week of January. Seems like they might be using these to plug the gap between the end of the current 75/76 season and the new 71/72 series.
I bet there was a big queue of schoolkids on Monday morning when the gates opened at the school behind the QPR ground - a free football was up for grabs !
I think my favourite goal of the six contenders was Brian Bason’s for Chelsea v Carlisle, not because it was necessarily the best but as we had the sight of him hobbling around just seconds before he lashed the ball home.
On the other side of the coin with Chelsea was the bizarre own goal Graham Wilkins scored at Bolton on the show this week. The sense of calamity was heightened by Gerald Sinstadt initially calling him ‘Gary Wilkins’.

Yup, pure comedy. One of my all-time favourite goals. What else was there to do when crippled than to take the ball and hammer an absolute thunderbastard in off the crossbar.
The other contender from that game was probably even better - albeit with the lack of comedy diminishing it in my eyes.

In Match Of The Day terms Manchester United would break the Spurs record with that Ipswich win in 1995
Never mind the Golden Goals - the only contender is that second Chelsea own goal. The funniest thing I've seen in ages - a striker would have been proud of that finish!
Good episode that. It was funny for me hearing Don Masson being asked about the QPR players berating one another., he was notorious for that at Notts, I think he would say himself that he was often hated by teammates, but he was easily our best player and I'm sure he did find it frustrating at times. Around 2002ish he was an on-pitch guest when we were home to QPR and he got a terrific reception from the visiting fans. Sad they couldn't secure the title to add to the list of unfashionable sides that won it in the 60s and 70s.

They matched it? Both were 9-0. And we've had a handful more since.
It looks like ITV4 are going gung-ho on the Big Match Revisited in 2026! Not only will they re-run the 1976/77 season, but Digiguide is suggesting they will re-run the 1974/75 season straight after that from the second week of January. Early morning editions on ITV4.

They did a similar thing in 2022, with two (repeated) episodes a day until early February.

Brian Kidd's hairstyle looked extremely improbable in that interview - like someone had plonked a huge wig on his head.
The advert at Highbury for Status Quo's "Blue For You" must have worked, as it spent three weeks at no 1 in the album chart.

I'd vote for Alex Forsyths goal from that lot!
I'd vote for Brooking's goal at Derby
