I thought that throwing toilet rolls started, well before that. Michael Green, in his coarse books, talks about, hecklers at sport events. Who only contribute to play, by throwing a toilet roll.
Yes, toilet rolls being thrown at football grounds was happening way before the 1978 World Cup. It was when Spurs signed Ardiles and Villa and Birmingham signed Tarantini after that World Cup that the ‘confetti like’ greeting of the teams arriving on the pitch started. The terraces would have been a nightmare to clean up during the time that this was a trend. Most of it was from old newspapers being torn into small pieces.
Bit of a boring observation, but the graphics and the fact Lewis Williams was credited as director - who has been billed as directing a couple of episodes this season - would suggest it was LWT coverage at Sunderland, rather than Tyne Tees.

There's a great photo taken at Newcastle v Liverpool in 1969 from behind the goal of a dog invading the pitch and the goal net has a load of toilet roll caught up in it.

Possibly, with greater resources allocated because of the game’s importance but Lewis Williams did work for Tyne Tees in the 70s and 80s.
Also worked on Midweek Sports Special and Thames Sport.

ITV Racing was at Market Rasen that day, which would normally have been a YTV OB, but if Yorkshire was covering something else, Tyne Tees could have been sent to do the racing.

Really ? Even though Norwich and Birmingham are about 40 odd miles closer ?
What a dreadful been game the main game was today. Both teams seemed more intent on kicking lumps out of each other than playing football. Poor advert. The highlights consisted of as much showing crocked men on the deck than football.

but at least the ending of the Grimsby-Palace game more than made up for it from my point of view
Feels like at this point they were still showing the LWT game first regardless of how good it was. The other two seemed more entertaining matches based on what we saw.
Enjoyed the Grimsby v Palace highlights. A rare chance on The Big Match to see a game from Blundell Park and one of the last few football commentaries Keith Macklin would have done for Yorkshire before being replaced in the role.
I would have thought Grimsby would come under Anglia's region - I don't think it's ever been in Yorkshire? Although at this stage it was in the county of Humberside, which included bits of Yorkshire, so perhaps Yorkshire was claiming the whole of Humberside.

Grimsby moved to the Yorkshire region in 1974, and is still there today.
Lots of the Yorkshire region isn't in Yorkshire, which is why they tend to refer to it as "the Calendar region", as "Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and bits of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Norfolk Television" is not quite as snappy.

Grimsby - like Hull - would have been in the Anglia region prior to the move to Yorkshire 2 years earlier.
Well that episode just filled me with disgust. Frankie bloomin' Lane. my god. Our manager said to the press afterwards 'He has killed us, he gave away both the goals and finished our chances of going up.'
Lane never played for us again. Had we won that game we would have been 1 point behind 2nd and 3rd place. We could have gone up leaving Forest behind a division below. I feel sick.
That Arsenal match was on Danny Baker's Right Hammerings video, I remember Dan pointing out how furious Brian Kidd was at the disallowed goals - "he must really hate West Ham!"
That must be Northampton's finest ever televised moment, and nice to see them scoring six when one of their few other appearances on that programme was letting in eight to Man U.
Interesting to think about what clubs have appeared on this programme both being thrashed and doing the thrashing. Bristol Rovers must hold some kind of record for the joint highest number of goals conceded on Match of the Day when they let in nine against Spurs and the joint highest number of goals scored on The Big Match when they put eight past Brighton.

same here and I didn't know Billy Bonds died until I read the post on here just now, RIP a true Hammers legend
I love watching the lower league clips to try and spot players who went onto bigger and better things in their careers, as well as those who’d played at a higher level winding down before retirement. John Gregory playing for Northampton this week as well as Alan Ainscow and George Wood playing for Blackpool. Back in the day, my dad was never in any hurry to get the washing up done after Sunday lunch when he knew that it was Walsall as the main feature match on ‘Star Soccer’ in the midlands where I lived at the time.

Wolves were at Old Trafford with ATV taking The Kick Off Match from Granada therefore it would have been ATV were doing Market Rasen racing for World Of Sport

If YTV were also doing racing that day it was Doncaster so ATV would have covered at Market Rasen

ITV didn't cover racing at Doncaster that day, it was Market Rasen and Hereford. And ATV would have been at Hereford.

Wolves were at Old Trafford for the QF against Manchester United so made sense for ATV to take The Kick Off Match from Granada as ATV cameras were covering Hereford racing for World Of Sport
while YTV were at Market Rasen as the other meeting on World Of Sport
They must have had at least one ob unit that was dedicated to covering racing or other sports for World of Sport. For example, the corresponding weekend 50 years ago, racing was broadcast live from Lingfield and Catterick, yet LWT, Southern, ATV, Tyne Tees, YTV, Anglia, STV and Granada all turned up at a football match that Saturday,. I would presume that on occasion there were events that required more than one unit, or that maintenance or other issues required one of the regions that would otherwise be committed to football to step in for WOS, but in terms of the racing it won't always be obvious whose ob unit turned up where.
There was obviously some level of flexibility, but by the sounds of it, that involved spending money. Roger Tames appeared on a Newcastle fan podcast a few months ago, in which he mentioned that when Kevin Keegan signed for Newcastle in 1982, it threw Tyne Tees. They hadn't intended to cover a match on the opening weekend of the 1982-83 season, and suddenly Keegan's debut, for Newcastle against QPR, was arguably the biggest match of the day, and their OB unit was committed to covering horse racing at Gosforth Park. "We had to hire in a unit," Tames said, "and the late George Taylor, who was the boss then, hated spending money."

The advertising board for Emmanuelle replaced by The Story Of O.
I haven't seen them at other grounds so they must appeal to Chelsea fans !
