This station is a typical a type of station that should be permanent! It's well done produced, big sounding American radio with the liners, ID's and sung jingle package and with the right processing too. Vintage processing even it's a Inovonics. True, this should be a real Optimod 8100 of course with a set of prisms and a stereo enhancer like Z100 NYC using back in the day but this Ino sound also big. I think it's more than a Inovonics to be honest and with stereo enhancement. But a Ino is also very restless processor because when you give full gas on it the sound pumping and sounding very aggressive like a singleband compressor/limiter. But this Ino sounds pretty good. So I wonder what's beside this Ino, I guess also some digital unit to encode this on stream.
To capture an authentic sound, the audio is being processed through a vintage Inovonics FM250 unit dating back to 1983, the same type used widely by radio stations during the decade. This approach gives WSQK a period-accurate tone that matches the Stranger Things setting.
I’m not convinced the 250FM is actually being used, the live stream has quite a stereo enhancement and sounds too clean for a 250 imo 🙂
I think it likely is, with a little something 'extra' in the chain - stereo enhancement?

The orban 222a was used a lot back in the 90s for stereo enhancement before the processor in the chain but the 250FM was quite ‘mushy’ sounding as it used PWM (pulse width modulation) to control the audio clocked at 100KHz and this produced some weird artefacts especially when driven hard. The treble (hf) was most affected.
Such a lovely wide stereo image - you’re right slightly heavy on the processing but it’s a great listen - the attention to detail is excellent. Well done Global!

Seems a bit of a stretch that they would hire a unit and install it in one of their racks just for a photo?
I'm thinking that this unit would've been used originally for Capital and has been in storage for quite some time.
Format is great and make this station permanent with some changes and skip all the Stranger Things segments after january from it and use it as a Capital FM tribute station from the 80's and 90's with the old jingles etc. B.t.w. I think Capital never use Inonvonics, it was an Optimod I guess.

That would be great, especially if they included some archive audio.

The whole thing is an advert for Stranger Things, and once Netflix stop paying it will be gone. If this type of station was likely to make money Global would have done it before now.

Global have the possibilities for it, so why not. This station is sounding great overall and also reminds me of the station Lazer Hits ( www.lazerhits.online) what is a Lazer Hot Hits tribute station they bring it to the now with big sounding processing, American liners and fast pace radio.

I have never watched it and probably never will, it's just not my thing, but I had a listen to this station and other than various mentions of Stranger Things in the imaging it sounded like an 80s gold station with a few deeper cuts than you normally get. What's the link? It all seems a bit tenuous. Is this an in-world radio station in the series?

Ok, great but keep it with some changes I wrote above.

Hawkins, Indiana is the fictional town where the series is set. I assume this is the kind of station that a small mid west town would have had in the mid 1980s.
It's clear that Netflix have bankrolled the whole thing to promote the new series, and Global make a nice profit from it. It's the usual DS thing of thinking this could be permanent, when in reality it's just a commercial promotion. It will be gone by the New Year.

Yeah, I get it, but an old anorak can dream can’t it? 😉
This is soooo well produced and great top notch marketing though! Deep bow to Global/Netflix and all involved.👌
I hope this is an inspiration also for other stations with the same idea to make a tribute station or something like that in the spirit of 80's radio. Laser 558 tribute/Laser Hits doing this for a little while now but it always can be better.

Do enlighten us all! Personally, I think @SouthCity is right.

.....or perhaps not.
No I mean the station voice in the station ID's.
Can I get higher?
Yes I can.
The SBR artefacts make it sound a bit odd, the same is true of all of Global's streams.
