New Waitrose ad: The Perfect Gift with Keira Knightley and Joe Wilkinson

(Wasn't sure what thread to put this in; I didn't think it warranted the "Worst advert on TV one"...)

Really interesting how they presented this new ad tonight, before Corrie. In recent years I've seen lots of "advertising premieres" that get their own little continuity announcement, but I've never seen a commercial actually billed in TV listings (or it was on Sky's EPG at any rate). Shades of the old "ad mags" from the 1950s.

Anyway, I rather enjoyed it as a cheeky melange of Last Christmas and Love Actually. I wonder if Keira and Joe will become a long-running Gold Blend-style couple :)

Very much a case of he who pays the piper, calls the tune.
So, if you pay a TV channel enough money, they will do anything they legally can that you want.

Personally, I think it's jumping the shark to put it on as a standalone programme, but that's the sign of the times. People will do anything for money.
ITV sold out years ago with product placement, which blurred the lines of programme content and advertising.

Gone off Waitrose since the debacle with that autistic lad. Was very disappointing from them.

If Waitrose want to offer me a gift they could start by building a store closer than a 35 mile round trip.

Very true. They handled that appallingly.

We don't get Waitrose adverts up here (South Scotland/Cumbria) because we have none of their stores here - apart from a motorway services for travellers. Not rich enough for them, but thats fine, we have amazing farm shops with some of the best produce you can buy - so we dont miss them!

262 mile round trip for me.

I'm surprised they don't advertise on telly in Scotland, as there are branches in Edinburgh and I'm guessing other Scottish cities too.

I think Stirling is the farthest north store.

Just googled my local Waitrose is 17 miles away so a 34 mile round trip. I usually get a delivery Wednesday & Sunday....I have a delivery pass so costs around £1 per delivery..

The autistic male was offered a job at Waitrose in the end....

Edinburgh would be my nearest, and that's a minimum 3 hour round trip drive - not worth it. There are 6 Waitrose in Scotland - most northern being Stirling, and the other's around Glasgow and Edinburgh. Going south we are looking at Preston - another 3 hour + round trip. So no, Waitrose don't bother to advertise in the Scottish Borders/Cumbria because they don't bother to add stores here - too much excellent competition!

Yikes. That's a long way for a bottle of milk!

I don't understand why we don't have one here. We have one of the largest John Lewis stores in the country, and it reportedly trades above the chain average in a lot of departments. Yet we can't support a single Waitrose, not even a Little Waitrose convenience store? It's weird.

He was, but only after his Mum went to the media and quite rightfully shamed them into it.

This appears on ITVX as a separate programme, which seems odd to me.

I've just re-read your opening post. There's no mention of ITVX in it.

Probably only because they were trying to save their 'image'.

I saw this in the Sky EPG and not knowing what it was, I recorded it, as a short five minute drama, which I thought it was, sounded intriguing.

Noticed it was also on ITV2 and ITV3 at the same time.

Guess it would have been on ITV4 too but they had live snooker.
