If you watch too much TV, you’ll be convinced that the only way to properly cook ribs is to smoke or grill them.

Wrong!

Smoking and grilling add specific flavors, yes. But baking ribs in the oven with a respectable rub and BBQ sauce makes them no less succulent or tasty. It’s easy to regulate temperature and you don’t have to stand outside in your boxers and bare feet. Furthermore, who are you trying to impress?

Snoop Dogg From Crook to Cook cover

The featured image on this post shows Snoop Dogg’s rib recipe, Baby Got Back Ribs, from his cookbook, which I got for Christmas. You can look it up online or buy the book (it’s good) but the basic approach is a good rub, bake at low heat wrapped in foil, then slather with BBQ sauce and broil for the last few minutes. The result is excellent if the quality of the ribs is excellent. Baby backs are the ribs of choice.

I don’t have my own rib recipe because I use this one every time. I’ve tried smoking and grilling. More trouble, more agonizing and, depending on your attention span, more inconsistent results.

There are plenty of low-and-slow oven recipes for ribs. Bake ‘em, baby!
