Df(2L)TW50/SM5 shows reduced viability: only 4% of expected progeny survive. Ddc1/SM5 also shows reduced viability: only 24% of expected progeny survive.
Homozygous lethal. Heterozygote usually has good viability and fertility, although may not be as good as SM1. Most complete balancer for chromosome 2.
SM5 arose from SM1 through two inversions (In(2L)SM5-1 followed by In(2L)SM5-2) and a complex rearrangement - the symbol Dp(2;2)SM5 was chosen for the complex rearrangement to emphasize the duplicated segment from the progenitor over the inverted segment.
