Flies expressing EBV\BRLF1GMR.PA display rough eyes and extra small bristles.
Expression of EBV\BRLF1GMR.PA results in a rough adult eye phenotype. While wild-type eyes have an organized pattern of ommatidia, the flies expressing EBV\BRLF1GMR.PA show unorganized ommatidial and bristle structure. The eye-phenotype is dose sensitive: the higher the dose, the more severe the phenotype is.
In EBV\BRLF1GMR.PA eye discs, more mitotic cells are found in the morphogenetic furrow as well as more mitotic cells posterior to the furrow. EBV\BRLF1GMR.PA discs have on average 1.5 times more cells in mitosis than wild-type discs. Overproliferation is also evident in EBV\BRLF1GMR.PA adult eyes. Some ommatidia contain an extra photoreceptor cell. The eyes of the mutants also show an overabundance of pigment granules, which contributes to the darker adult eye color is these flies.

While EBV\BZLF1GMR.PA expression alone does not significantly alter the number of mitotic cells in eye discs, expression of EBV\BZLF1GMR.PA reverses the EBV\BRLF1GMR.PA overproliferation, such that the number of mitotic cells is lower than in wild-type controls. The number of short hair-like bristles in the adult eye is also decreased. The eye color of the double-transgenic flies is very similar to that of single-transgenic EBV\BZLF1GMR.PA flies (orange), suggesting that pigment cells do not over-proliferate as in EBV\BRLF1GMR.PA-eyes. The double-transgenic flies show a complete loss of ommatidia, although the bristles remain.
