Hayan¹ mutant animals appear normal in terms of developmental rate and fertility.

When Hayan¹ mutant flies are wounded during the adult stages, melanization is severely impaired around the wound site.

Hayan¹ mutant flies subjected to severe wounding exhibit a reduced survival rate compared to controls. A similar reduction in survival is seen when flies are reared in germ-free conditions, indicating that the observed mortality is not due to infection. Wounding in the presence of bacteria did not further reduce the survival rate. The survival rate is improved when flies are exposed to a non-lethal concentration of a pro-oxidant (by ingesting paraquat). A similar increase in mortality is seen when wounding occurs at the larval stage.

A Hayan¹ mutant background completely suppresses the spontaneous melanization seen when Spn27A^{dsRNA.Scer\UAS} is expressed under the control of Scer\GAL4^da.G32.

Hayan¹ suppresses the exaggerated melanization seen in Spn28Dc^Δ2 mutant larvae following wounding. The spontaneous melanization seen in larval trachea and spiracles and lateral sides of the pupae are also abolished.

Hayan¹ rescues the pupal stage lethality associated with Spn28Dc^Δ2 mutants.

A Hayan¹ mutant background suppresses the spontaneous tracheal melanization seen when Spn77Ba^{dsRNA.WIZ.Scer\UAS} is expressed under the control of Scer\GAL4^da.G32.

Expression of Jafrac1^{dsRNA.Scer\UAS} under the control of Scer\GAL4^da.G32 partially suppresses the wound-induced mortality seen in Hayan¹ mutants. The mortality is also rescued when Jafrac1^{dsRNA.Scer\UAS} is expressed in neurons under the control of Scer\GAL4^Cha.7.4, but not when it is expressed in hemocytes under the control of Scer\GAL4^He.PZ.

Expression of Irc^{dsRNA.Scer\UAS} under the control of Scer\GAL4^da.G32 partially suppresses the wound-induced mortality seen in Hayan¹ mutants. The mortality is also rescued when Irc^{dsRNA.Scer\UAS} is expressed in neurons under the control of Scer\GAL4^Cha.7.4, but not when it is expressed in hemocytes under the control of Scer\GAL4^He.PZ.

A puc^E69/+ mutant background suppresses the mortality induced when homozygous Hayan¹ mutants are wounded at either the larval or adult stages.
