G to A nucleotide change at the second or third position of the wild type Trp codon leads to a nonsense mutation (exact site of mutation unspecified). The mutation was annotated at the second base of the codon.
rno1 somatic clones generated during eye development result in mostly normal adult eye morphology.
Occasionally (in less than 5% of cases) rno1 third instar larval eye disc clones develop multiple photoreceptor R8 cells within a single ommatidial cluster.
In third instar larval eye discs, cells from somatic clones mutant for rno1 show slight delays in photoreceptor differentiation compared to surrounding control tissue.

Doubly mutant rno1 and Rbf15aΔ somatic clones generated during eye development result in shiny eye differentiation defects in the adult eye. Pupal eye discs are largely devoid of bristle cells, and adult eyes lack bristles.
Multiple photoreceptor R8 cells are observed within the same ommatidial cluster in roughly 20% of third instar larval eye disc clones mutant for both rno1 and Rbf15aΔ.
The multiple-R8 phenotype seen in rno1 or rno1, Rbf15aΔ eye somatic mutant clones is not significantly affected by Egfrf2/+, but is significantly enhanced in a Dl05151/+ background.
The shiny-eye and multiple photoreceptor-R8 phenotype seen in rno1, Rbf15aΔ eye somatic mutant clones is significantly suppressed in a E2fi2/E2frM729 mutant background.
In third instar larval eye discs, cells from somatic clones mutant for both rno1 and Rbf15aΔ show significant and enhanced delays in photoreceptor differentiation compared to controls.
The shiny-eye phenotype and multiple photoreceptor-R8 phenotype observed in rno1 somatic clones in the eye is not enhanced in a E2fsu89 background.
