In this example, we will discuss the Java .equals method. This is one of the methods that all objects have since it is defined in the Object class, which is the base for all Java classes. The functionality of the .equals method is to check if the object invoking this method is equal to another object passed as an argument. It should return true if the objects are equal, otherwise it should return false. It is generally necessary to override the hashCode() method whenever the equals() method is overridden, so as to maintain the general contract for the hashCode() method, which states that equal objects must have equal hash codes. The Java .equals method for the Object class implements the most discriminating possible equivalence relation on objects; that is, for any non-null reference values x and y, this method returns true if and only if x and y refer to the same object (x == y has the value true). 1.
