The ABU Golden Kite World Song Festival’s were held from 1989 to 1991 and were organised by the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union and the Malaysian broadcaster TV3.
The ABU Golden Kite World Song Festival’s was a competitive contest held in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur and broadcast across the region as well as Europe.
According to the Australian broadcaster, the ABU Golden Kite World Song Festival was due to be hosted by Malaysia for five years from 1989 to 1994.

ABU Golden Kite World Song Festival 1989
The first ABU Golden Kite World Song Festival took place on October 1st. The contest was a merger between the ABU Popular Song Contest which had been run by the ABU from 1985 to 1987 and the domestic Malaysian contest the Golden Kite Festival which was run by the Malaysian broadcaster TV3.
The contest was hosted by TV3 and presented by Wan Zalleha and Mahathir Lokman. The venue was the Putra World Trade Centre.

ABU Golden Kite World Song Festival 1990
The 1990 contest was once again held in Malaysia at the Putra World Trade Centre, this time in September 1990. A total of 14 countries took part in this contest, the running order on the night was as shown below. As with the 1989 the results were decided by a jury of music professionals and experts. Cash prizes were once again given to the winners of the prizes however the amounts are unknown.
ABU Golden Kite World Song Festival 1991
The ABU Golden Kite World Song Festival returned for a third and what was final time. After this years contest the ABU broke ties with the contest and the Golden Kite festival returned to a domestic Malaysian show. This year a total of 17 countries competed in the contest, Jordan returned to the contest after a 1 year break, and Iran and Turkey make their first appearance at the contest. Withdrawing from the contest that year were Hong Kong and Yugoslavia.
The contest was hosted by Mahadzir Lokman & Wan Zaleha Radzi and took place on November 25th.
