Libya is eligible to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest and family of events, holding full membership of the European Broadcasting Union.
Interest in Eurovision?
Libya is one of just two nations with full membership of the European Broadcasting Union that has never broadcast a Eurovision contest. Libya’s current public broadcaster LNC and former broadcaster LJBC have held membership of the EBU since 1974. LNC has been broadcasting since the end of 2014, however does not operate from Libya instead airing from the Jordanian capital, Amman.
Libya was also eligible to compete in a canceled spin-off version of the Eurovision Song Contest for the Arab world that was first discussed in 2007. The contest would have seen up to twenty-two countries including Libya competing in a new version of the Eurovision Song Contest, find out more here.
Ahead of the 2019 contest held in Tel Aviv, Israel,ย it was reported that the Israeli Minister of Communications would invite Algeria and several other Arab nations to participate in the contest. However, no Arab nation competed in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019.
Jon Ola Sand, Executive Supervisor of the Eurovision Song Contest in 2020 stated in an interview with AD.nl that at the time he saw no interest from Middle Eastern countries in the competition.
