Senior Attorney for Enforcement Program
Location: Washington, D.C. or Remote
POSITION OVERVIEW
EIP is accepting applications for a Senior Attorney to join our team working to hold industrial polluters and federal and state agencies accountable for compliance with environmental laws. The Senior Attorney will support EIP’s Enforcement Program and work to reduce pollution from industrial sources through citizen suit enforcement actions and other advocacy strategies. EIP takes legal action to clean up pollution; we publish data-driven reports that push federal and state regulators to better protect public health; and we work with frontline communities to provide them with the resources they need to obtain the protection of our environmental laws.
EIP is a national organization with strong partnerships with frontline communities and organizations in the Gulf States, Ohio River Valley, Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic regions. We are dedicated to reducing the enormous amount of climate, air, and water pollution generated by the fossil fuel power sector and industries that extract, store, or process oil or natural gas to make fuel, chemicals and plastics, fertilizers, and other petrochemical products. EIP work also targets pollution from other sectors, including steel manufacturing, aluminum production, and landfills and trash incinerators.
The Senior Attorney position will support these programs and can be based in Washington, DC or remote. The position will require occasional travel throughout the U.S.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop, analyze, and execute enforcement and other legal strategies to reduce pollution.
 - Perform a range of litigation and legal tasks to support litigation and other advocacy efforts, including: legal research; drafting comments, complaints, motions, briefs, and discovery requests and responses; and oral advocacy.
 - Work with internal and external experts to develop factual, technical, and scientific support for citizen suit enforcement actions and other advocacy efforts.
 - Represent EIP and other organizations in federal and state litigation, administrative proceedings, and public meetings.
 - Manage client relationships and work effectively within coalitions.
 - Draft grant proposals and reports.
 - Work with EIP’s communications and research teams to develop and execute communications strategies and reports.
 
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
- A law degree and active bar membership in good standing.
8+ years of legal experience, including experience in environmental law. Strong preference for attorneys with experience enforcing violations of environmental laws. - Excellent analytical, research, writing, organizational, oral communication, and interpersonal skills.
 - Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and external partners.
 - Prior experience or demonstrated commitment to working with members of communities directly impacted by pollution.
 - Strong work ethic, robust problem-solving skills, and sound judgment.
 
COMPENSATION
EIP offers competitive salaries, excellent benefits, and a supportive working environment. Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and is commensurate with skills and experience. For this position, the salary range is $105,000 – $135,000.

Engineer for Enforcement Program

Working with EIP’s team of lawyers and analysts, the Engineer, who will support EIP’s Enforcement Program, will work to reduce pollution from industrial sources through litigation. EIP takes legal action to clean up pollution; we publish data-driven reports that push federal and state regulators to better protect public health; and we work with frontline communities to provide the resources they need to obtain the protection of our environmental laws.

The Engineer position will support these programs and can be based in Washington, DC or remote. The position may require occasional travel throughout the U.S.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work with EIP’s legal team, analysts, and external experts to develop factual, technical, and scientific support for citizen suit enforcement and other advocacy efforts.
 - Research and draft technical memos, comments, and reports related to Clean Air Act violations at industrial facilities.
 - Provide technical support for communities impacted by air pollution from industrial operations.
 - Manage client and community relationships and work effectively within coalitions.
 - Work with EIP’s communications and research teams to develop and execute communications strategies and investigative reports.
 
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
- Must be a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) or have an equivalent degree or certification.
 - 10+ years of engineering experience, and experience in relevant fields, including but not limited to environmental engineering, chemical engineering, and/or petroleum engineering.
 - Strong preference for engineers with experience developing and supporting enforcement actions to address violations of the Clean Air Act and other environmental laws.
 - Excellent analytical, research, writing, organizational, oral communication, and interpersonal skills.
 - Demonstrated commitment to protecting public health and the environment.
 - Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and external partners.
 - Strong work ethic, robust problem-solving skills, and sound judgment.

2026 Summer Law Clerk
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Environmental Integrity Project (EIP) is seeking law clerks for Summer 2026 to advance environmental protections at the federal, state, and local levels under the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and other federal and state environmental laws. This position can be remote, hybrid or in-person at EIP’s DC office.
The law clerks’ duties will include legal research and writing related to environmental, administrative, and information-collecting statutes and regulations, review of pollution permits and data, and other work to support public comments, litigation, and issue-focused reports.
QUALIFICATIONS
Currently enrolled law students are eligible to apply. Applications from current 1L and 2L students (i.e. students who are not graduating before December 2026) will be considered. Candidates should have completed at least one year of law school and have a strong interest in environmental advocacy.
This role is open to candidates in states where EIP is registered as an employer. Right now, we are actively hiring in the following states: Alabama, California, Colorado, Connecticut, D.C., Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington. Because of business registration requirements, we may prioritize candidates in those locations—but we’d still love to hear from all qualified applicants. The ideal candidate will have a background or coursework in environmental law and administrative law, and a demonstrated commitment to environmental protection and/or non-profit advocacy. Previous experience with the Clean Air Act or Clean Water Act, developing or litigating cases, commenting on or challenging permits or rules, policy analysis, media outreach, and/or coalition building would also be helpful. Candidates should be able to handle multiple tasks at once and work well with others and must demonstrate strong writing and analytical skills.
COMPENSATION
Academic credit and/or an hourly wage of $22 per hour. EIP can provide both credit and an hourly wage if the clerk’s law school’s policies expressly permit students to receive academic credit for paid externships.
