Etymology

From Old Norse *snoka, from Proto-Germanic *snukōną, from Proto-Germanic *snuk-; whence also Norwegian Nynorsk snoka (to sniff out, spy), Danish snoge (to snoop), Icelandic snokinn (curious, interested in, nosy), and Middle English snoken (whence English snoke (to snuff, smell)). Compare also Middle Low German snȫkeren (to sniff out, search with the snout, smell).
