[edit]murtaa (“to break (into pieces)”) + -e. First attested in 1644[1] in the sense “break, breakage, breaking point”. In 1819, Jaakko Juteini used the word to refer to a nonstandard usage of language; one year later, in 1820, Finnish linguist and author Reinhold von Becker became the first to use it to mean “dialect”.[2]
