Etymology

Old Swedish aflat, from Middle Low German aflat (forgiveness), from verb aflaten (to forgive, to pardon), equivalent to av- (off) +‎ låta (to allow, to let). Cognate with Icelandic aflát, Danish aflad, German Ablass, Dutch aflaat.
