Without "dataset_type" common submodules.

Tested and implemented on srwikt now. Dušan Kreheľ (talk) 17:20, 19 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

also on wikt-vi; there are enough people watching that that any problems will be noticed kwami (talk) 03:56, 20 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Kwamikagami:
It would be okey, i tested alone.

Data from commons

[edit]

I would like to inform everyone that in the project "Module:Unicode data" I implemented the idea that the data would be taken from commons. In the spirit of: "One data, multiple wikipedias". I set it up in those modules (on those wikipedias where the rights didn't prevent me from doing so) to work that way. The data is on commons here: commons:Category:Unicode_Module_Datasets. Scripts for creation here: m:User:Dušan Kreheľ/Generate Scripts for Unicode Module Datasets. On commons are data: names, images, emoji images, aliases, blocks, category, combining, combining classes, control, scripts. Dušan Kreheľ (talk) 19:08, 31 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

yes, thanks for that. we've needed this for a long time kwami (talk) 10:29, 1 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Links, so that discussions of this are findable in the future: Wiktionary talk:Administrators#Edit and delete pages (oof, may want to move that to the GP or BP), Wiktionary:Grease pit/2025/July#unprotection request. - -sche (discuss) 17:26, 3 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi (all folks in thread), I'm trying to clarify the wording of the entry that Dušan Kreheľ proposed in Tech News, so that it makes more sense to people unfamiliar with this set of tools/modules.
Firstly, please could you confirm if my rewording is still accurate, and hopefully clearer? (It needs to be finalized by ~24hours from now, as it is frozen for translation over the weekend)
Secondly, is there anything that people at other wikis need to be asked to do/update in relation to this change, or will things automatically redirect as needed? I.e. Is it necessary to add another sentence, along the lines of "Please update your local modules so that they point to Commons instead." or similar?
Thanks. Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 19:21, 7 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Updated again, and copying here for ease of reading and suggesting tweaks:
Do you request/recommend any changes to that? Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 19:28, 7 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Quiddity (WMF):
  1. Rewrited.
  2. Maybe it's not necessary to mention it, just a link here. You can study the changes on enwiki/enwikt (like validation of changes). You can also find it here or ask.

I copyedited the (modified) text. I was not aware other wikis were invoking our modules (other than by copying the content of them over to their own wikis), so I'm not the best person to judge whether or not the text is right and I don't know if other wikis need to do anything — @Kwamikagami, Surjection? presumably any wikis that were invoking our modules just need to invoke Commons' instead now? — but FWIW at least nothing in the text looks obviously wrong to me. - -sche (discuss) 20:18, 7 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
i believe all other wikis are now pulling from commons. if anyone has questions they can presumably ask there. kwami (talk) 20:35, 7 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
actually, it looks like mandarin is still calling from the individual pages, which then call from commons. kwami (talk) 20:53, 7 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Where should we direct people with questions? Perhaps here, or perhaps c:Category talk:Unicode Module Datasets, or somewhere else?
I.e. I suggest that I add something like these two sentence to the end, but I need to know what link to use. (Wording-improvement suggestions, are also welcome!):
  • […] Most wikis have been updated to use the Commons version. You can ask questions at [[LINK|the talkpage]].
Thanks again. Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 21:00, 7 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
i think it should be at commons, since that's where the links go, but that's just me kwami (talk) 23:30, 7 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Sounds good to me, as long as people who understand the code are watchlisting that page!
I've updated the Tech News draft to this final version:
(Context: The final link is purposefully a plain "[2]" because many Tech News readers don't know English so wouldn't benefit from randomly browsing here. That's why we do the same with most Phabricator links in Tech News.)
If anyone wants changes to that draft, please either edit it within the next ~19 hours, or reply to me here. Thanks again. (And thanks for your efforts to centralize and update these modules!) Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 23:44, 7 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
