Endgames are most fundamental in the study of chess. For they provide goals which a player may endeavour to achieve in mid-games and openings.

In the diagram on the right-hand side, white draws by using his rook to hold the enemy king on the fourth rank. If black pushes his pawn, his own king is exposed to perpetual checks.
