Conventions for visa policy maps
[edit]Hello, WP:MAPS. I am currently working on the visa policy of Nauru, and I was wondering if there was any conventions on the colors would be? It seems like the other visa policy articles have a lot of different colors, and I just wanted to be correct. WikiConference North America 2022 will be virtual, November 11-13. We will hold it jointly with OpenStreetMap US's Mapping USA. Our theme this year is open knowledge allies.
Registration is now open here! Please register by the 10th so that we can set everyone up online on our platform. Like last year, we are planning on using Hopin. mapframe maps
[edit]I've been doing a lot of editing on infobox map issues, following up on Wikipedia:Mapframe maps in infoboxes. Today I noticed this project page makes a few mentions of that underlying technology, but nothing in particular about this, so maybe we should add something. --Joy (talk) 15:31, 16 August 2025 (UTC)
There is a discussion at Wiki project Military History about whether the MOS:COLOR accessibility guideline should have an exception for colors used in maps. Noleander (talk) 01:34, 16 September 2025 (UTC)

Update: The above-named discussion about applying MOS:COLOR to maps concluded last week. The results were:
- A new sentence was added to MOS:COLOR: "Applying these color accessibility guidelines to images and maps sometimes requires judgement when balancing them with other design principles."
- That new sentence in MOS:COLOR is accompanied by a new footnote: "For guidance on designing maps for accessibility, see this academic paper, this Wikipedia information page, and this MOS Talk page discussion from September 2025."
- The existing WP Informational page WP:MAPCOLOR was updated to include guidance from this academic paper about map accessibility, and also to include some example maps.
There were some notions mentioned in the discussion that did not become recommendations, such as: "All new maps must comply with color accessibility guidelines", or "It is permissible for some maps to deviate from color accessibility guidelines, provided there are compelling cartographic design justifications." - where were the coordinates on that page sourced from?
- I can create a map of this in a few minutes, what I'm concerned about is that these coordinates seem to be user generated, which would be original research. GeogSage (⚔Chat?⚔) 21:36, 3 October 2025 (UTC)
- I started to take a stab at this, but it's kind of tricky because the vast majority of the points cluster in three small areas: Prince Rupert, Victoria, and Vancouver. See the autogenerated OpenStreetMap map: [1]. The headers ("North Coast", "Central Coast", and "South Coast") already tell you the general area of each fort, so I'm not sure how much more value a map would add. Help with finding an old map
[edit]There's currently a request at resource exchange for help in finding an old map:
Looking for the earliest known map of Adal region mentioned in this source p.126 [2] "A Venetian map published in 1555, four years before the stone wall was built around Harar shows Adal confined to the Hararghe plateau." For Adal (historical region)

Discussion about WikiProject banner templates
[edit]For WikiProjects that participate in rating articles, the banners for talk pages usually say something like:
- "This article has been rated as Low-importance on the importance scale."
There is a proposal to change the default wording on the banners to say "priority" instead of "importance". This could affect the template for your group. Generating cleaner OSM infobox maps
[edit]I made a script for automatically generating better location maps to replace OpenStreetMap screenshots: [github.com/jkunimune/auto-location-map](https://github.com/jkunimune/auto-location-map). You pass the name of an existing location map as an argument, and it automatically makes a vector map with the same bounds but less clutter and better contrast.
My goal is to use it to replace as many OSM screenshots as I can, but before I upload dozens of images I wanted to get feedback here and see if anyone has concerns about large-scale map replacement like this or feedback about the color scheme. Some examples for US cities are shown below. Pinging User:Jacobolus, User:OceanLoop, and User:Dissident93 since they've been in discussions about this recently.

MTM, UTM and similar articles
[edit]Hello project members!
I've significantly expanded (diff [3]) what was a stub at Modified transverse Mercator, and important alternative to UTM coordinates used in Canada. Both articles are listed as High-importance to this project. I welcome any feedback here or on the talk page there.
In the process, I found myself writing stuff which really has applicability to both MTM and UTM, and touches on projected coordinate systems and datums more generally. So in particular I welcome feedback, or even better assistance, on how to structure what is in what article more effectively. Martinp (talk) 21:27, 13 December 2025 (UTC)
