Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2026_January_5#Category:Free_Negroes

[edit]

Hi, please add your thoughts to this discussion Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2026_January_5#Category:Free_Negroes.--User:Namiba 15:07, 6 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

This category is listed as a sub-category of Category:19th-century American people by occupation. That seems odd to me; shouldn't slavery be regarded as a status rather than an occupation? What do people here think? If it was me, I would put it as a sub-category directly under Category:19th-century American people. And, of course, each individual article could also be listed under the person's occupation, if relevant. Brianyoumans (talk) 19:34, 15 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed; being enslaved is absolutely not an "occupation". Don't know what the thinking was behind this categorization, but it should be changed.
The template on that category page, "Slaves by nationality and century category header", shows what other categories of people are listed under occupations. "Slaves" are listed there alphabetically between "Sailors" and "Sportspeople". Not good. Funcrunch (talk) 22:19, 15 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
If it's about templates, I don't mess with those. Maybe you can do it? I write my little articles, compile lists, improve grammar, and leave the complicated stuff for others.Brianyoumans (talk) 03:05, 16 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I'd rather not make a change of this magnitude either, without further input from other editors. Funcrunch (talk) 03:20, 16 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

There is a requested move discussion at Talk:Lockheed Martin shooting#Requested move 10 January 2026 that may be of interest to members of this WikiProject. Vestrian24Bio 09:31, 18 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Seeking additional input on both the article Douglas Says and AfD for a Newark-based fashion designer with museum and university-press coverage related to Black cultural history. Editors familiar with assessing notability in fashion, museum studies, or cultural history would be appreciated. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vomni (talkcontribs) 01:40, 28 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

There is a discussion at Talk:Speculative fiction by writers of color#Implementing the split about how to split this page following the AfD discussion where there was agreement to split apart the page. Please share your thoughts for what sections you believe should be split off/merged to other pages. Thanks and have a great rest of your day. Historyday01 (talk) 13:47, 11 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
