Wikipedia:WikiProject Water sports/RNLI task force/Parent WikiProject
This proposal is a draft. Feedback and suggestions here or on the talk page are welcome. The intention is to work out the details before approaching the WikiProject Council. |
Proposal
[edit]The RNLI task force is currently part of WikiProject Water sports, an inactive and topically misaligned parent project. This proposal recommends creating WikiProject Search and rescue as a new parent project, under which the RNLI task force would be relocated. This change would:
- Align the task force with a more relevant thematic scope (SAR encompasses maritime rescue)
- Avoid reliance on inactive project infrastructure (particularly with classification)
- Support future task forces covering related topics (e.g. independent lifeboats, international SAR services)

The primary issue is that our parent project is defunct, and its talk page banner should be marked as inactive. However, doing so would temporarily remove all article classifications (quality and importance categories would not be applied by the banner); while not permanent it obviously wouldn't be ideal in the short term and the only proper fix is an active parent. There have also been numerous calls for this:
- Huh?
- Should WikiProject Water Sports/RNLI Task Force become its own WikiProject?
- Project RNLI proposal
- Name Change (important recent discussion)
Concerns
[edit]Why not just find a new home?
The most closely related one (if you squint a little) is probably WikiProject Disaster management, but aside from it having a different-than-desired main focus, it's also defunct.
Why not revive WikiProject Water sports?
Even if we did, we'd still have the problem of expanding scope as talked about here. As well as discoverability problems with things like rater (where people are likely to search for "rescue").
The amount of work
A lot has already been done as part of recent classification efforts. Most of the remaining work will involve identifying and updating the few loose ends.
The number of editors involved
While the group of editors may be small, it is non-zero (better than the current state). There has been interest in expanding to other areas for some time so activity is unlikely to fizzle out any time soon.
The number of articles involved
This task force covers ~730 articles. Wikiproject Search and rescue would easily be in the single digit thousands.
The technical difficulty
The user proposing this (Aluxosm) has experience with editing templates, working on and fixing problems with WikiProjects, and recently, with performing semi-automated edits using JWB.
