Wallington, New York
Wallington is a hamlet in the Town of Sodus, Wayne County, New York, United States. It is located along Ridge Road approximately 3 miles (5 km) southeast of the Village of Sodus and 6 miles (10 km) south-southwest of Sodus Point. The community developed in the early nineteenth century at the crossroads of Ridge Road and the north–south Pre-Emption (Geneva) Road.
Settlement began in the first decade of the 1800s following construction of inland roads from Sodus Bay.[1] The crossroads was originally known as Arms Cross Roads after Daniel and Mary Arms, who settled there in 1808.[1]
Geography
[edit]Wallington lies within the Town of Sodus, formed in 1790.[2]
The region is shaped by glacial landforms including drumlins and an east–west ridge known locally as “The Ridge,” believed to represent a former shoreline of glacial Lake Ontario.[2]
History
[edit]Early settlement (1794–1830s)
[edit]The hamlet of Wallington, originally known as Arms Crossroads, developed in the early nineteenth century at the intersection of Ridge Road and the north–south Geneva (Pre-emption) Road.[3] Ridge Road was one of western New York’s principal east–west thoroughfares during the nineteenth century, linking inland agricultural settlements with Lake Ontario ports.
In 1808, Daniel and Mary Arms established a homestead at the crossroads, and the settlement took its early name from the family.[3] A schoolhouse serving the surrounding agrarian community was built on land donated by Daniel Arms. The present cobblestone schoolhouse is reputed to have been constructed in 1834 on the site of an earlier building destroyed by fire.[3]
19th-century development
[edit]During the 1830s, the construction of cobblestone buildings along Ridge Road reflected a distinctive regional masonry tradition in western New York. The Wallington Cobblestone Schoolhouse (District No. 8), built circa 1834, is an example of Early Republic–period cobblestone architecture, characterized by irregular field cobbles laid in horizontal courses with limestone quoins at the corners.[3]
The schoolhouse served children from both the hamlet and the surrounding rural farming community until 1950, when a centralized school district was formed in the Village of Sodus.[3]
The nearby Walling Cobblestone Tavern, also dating to about 1834, functioned as a large inn serving travelers along Ridge Road, reinforcing the hamlet’s role as a crossroads community.[3]
20th century
[edit]In 1909, both east–west and north–south rail lines operated through the hamlet, strengthening its connections to regional markets.[3]
From approximately 1900 to 1926, a pickle processing factory operated in Wallington, purchasing produce from local farms and providing seasonal employment.[4]
In 1927, Katherine Olmsted established the Normandy Inn near Wallington; the restaurant operated for several decades and became a noted local dining establishment.[5]
From 1947 until 1975, the Skyway Drive-In operated near Wallington on Ridge Road, reflecting the mid-twentieth-century popularity of automobile-oriented entertainment venues.[6]
Post–World War II period
[edit]On May 8, 1945 (V-E Day), residents gathered at the Wallington Fire Hall to mark the end of World War II in Europe.[7]
A small private airfield known as Wallington Airport operated from 1946 to approximately 1950, reflecting postwar interest in civilian aviation.[8]
Historic architecture
[edit]Wallington contains two properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Walling Cobblestone Tavern, constructed circa 1834 along Ridge Road, is a representative example of the cobblestone masonry tradition distinctive to western New York. The building served as a roadside inn during the nineteenth century.[9]
The Wallington Cobblestone Schoolhouse (District No. 8), also built circa 1834, reflects early rural educational development in Wayne County and remained in use until the formation of a centralized district in 1950.[9]
Economy
[edit]Wallington historically functioned as an agricultural crossroads community serving surrounding farms. From approximately 1900 to 1926, a pickle processing factory operated in the hamlet, purchasing cucumbers and other produce from local growers and providing seasonal employment.[10]
A Heluva Good! Country Store once operated west of Wallington and was associated with HP Hood LLC. Both the retail location and a related cheese packaging facility in nearby Sodus closed in June 2015.[11]
Transportation
[edit]Ridge Road, a historic east–west thoroughfare in western New York, has long served as the principal route through Wallington.[12]
In 1909, rail service operated through the region north of the hamlet, strengthening connections to agricultural markets.[13]
The former rail corridor between Wallington and Sodus has been converted into the Sodus–Wallington Rail Trail, a multi-use recreational path extending approximately three miles.[14]
A small private airfield known as Wallington Airport operated from 1946 to approximately 1950.[15]
Culture and recreation
[edit]The Wallington Volunteer Fire Department hosts the “Bog & Grog,” a semiannual mud racing event held on the firemen’s field.[16]
From 1947 until 1975, the Skyway Drive-In operated near Wallington on Ridge Road, reflecting the mid-twentieth-century popularity of automobile-oriented entertainment venues.[17]
