Sockpuppet tags

[edit]

I see that you have added sockpuppet tags to a large number of user pages. I have checked only a minority of them, but as far as I saw it seems that although in many cases the account is a sockpuppet as you stated, in other cases it isn't at all clear that it was so. A number of them are blocked without any mention of sockpuppetry in the block rationale, and without as far as I can see any administrator having stated, or even suggested, that they are sockpuppets of the account you gave, and without being mentioned in the sockpuppet investigation that you have linked to. In one case it is an account that I blocked, and I know damned well that the block has nothing to do with sockpuppetry. Template:Sockpuppet is intended for use by administrators and clerks to record their findings of sockpuppetry, not for general use by editors to record their suspicions, as you will see if you read the documentation for the template. Therefore you should not continue to post the template, even for accounts which have been blocked for sockpuppetry, as opposed to the kinds of mistaken use that I have mentioned. @JBW: I'll stop adding the template, however to explain why I tagged that account, it was global locked as "LTA" along with one other accounts including 1 confirmed as a sockpuppet of U + 1F4AD in its block message and 3 that were specially stated at SPI as "confirmed to each other, and to recent socks in this SPI's archive." I've found that this user likes to use similar naming patterns for awhile before moving to a new one, so having the accounts tagged seemed like it would help track that, but like I said, I won't continue to add the template. Emk9, in addition to ceasing from adding the template to new pages, could you please review the templates you did leave and ensure they are all removed? Incorrect tagging can cause more confusion and disruption than not tagging at all. Thank you, -- Ponyobons mots 21:25, 25 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Ponyo:Sure, should I remove all of them, or leave ones were the block message or SPI comments explicitly make clear it should have been tagged but wasn't?
Remove all of them please. If you think something was missed by the SPI clerks, you can ask whoever was involved in that specific SPI to double check.-- Ponyobons mots 21:32, 25 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

G5 is not mandatory

[edit]

If a sockpuppet created a blank user sandbox page or something similar, there is no benefit to deleting it. Looking for G5s is important work, but please use some discretion when deciding whether to tag something for deletion. jlwoodwa (talk) 04:36, 16 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Jlwoodwa: Salebot uses those sandboxes to rapidly game EC so they can vandalize protected pages. I used the speedy delete tag to try to create an edit conflict, which causes them to stop editing for a short period of time. Using a speedy tag also has the possible benefit of being seen by an admin, though I also report them at AIV too. I could remove the tags after they've been blocked if that would be more helpful though. Emk9 (talk) 04:41, 16 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, sorry, I hadn't realized you added those tags before the account was blocked. (Usually that's discouraged, but I think it's fine here.) In that case, I agree that the benefit of edit conflicts and drawing admin attention makes it worth doing. jlwoodwa (talk) 05:32, 16 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi, could you just point to me the pages where they're been added? (excluding the California one, obviously) reppoptalk 15:14, 3 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Reppop: Looks like they are being added in alphabetical order, so List of United States senators from Alabama, List of United States senators from Alaska, List of United States senators from Arizona, List of United States senators from Arkansas, and List of United States senators from Colorado.
