Guide to temporary accounts
[edit]Hello, CambridgeBayWeather. This message is being sent to remind you of significant upcoming changes regarding logged-out editing.
Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have a temporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.
How do temporary accounts work?
- When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern:
~2025-12345-67(a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5). - All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
- A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
- As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
- There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
- There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.
Temporary account IP viewer user right
- Administrators may grant the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right to non-administrators who meet the criteria for granting. Importantly, an editor must make an explicit request for the permission (e.g. at WP:PERM/TAIV)—administrators are not permitted to assign the right without a request.
- Administrators will automatically be able to see temporary account IP information once they have accepted the Access to Temporary Account IP Addresses Policy via Special:Preferences or via the onboarding dialog which comes up after temporary accounts are deployed.
Impact for administrators
- It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects the autoblock option.
- It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
- Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. On Special:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should use Special:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).
Rules about IP information disclosure
- Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access is generally not allowed (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or ~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
- Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g.
~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward 3RR
, but not Hey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67) - See Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer § What can and can't be said for more detailed guidelines.
Useful tools for patrollers
- It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via the User Info card, available in Preferences → Appearance → Advanced options →
Enable the user info card
- This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
- Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
- Similarly, Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
- The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.

ArbCom 2025 Elections voter message
[edit]Hello! Voting in the 2025 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 1 December 2025. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2025 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:21, 18 November 2025 (UTC)
Mass Merge of Airports?
[edit]I don't disagree, but I would be interested to read the discussion that led to such a large change. Benfwilliamson (talk) 04:53, 26 November 2025 (UTC)
- There wasn't one as such but Wikipedia:Be bold applies. I created a lot of these minor airports in 2005 / 2006 when standards for notability were lower and stubs like these were welcomed. Although some were sent to AfD (Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Esterhazy Airport) the outcome tended to be keep. However, as Wikipedia grew things were tightened up and now the outcome for these sorts of airports runs to redirect, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Bracebridge West Aerodrome, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mont-Tremblant/Lac Ouimet Water Aerodrome, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Winnipeg/Lyncrest Airport, and there are others.
- I have made sure not to redirect any airport that has scheduled flights (Fort Chipewyan Airport for example), sourced information (not from the Canada Flight Supplement) that appears to provide notability (Airdrie Aerodrome for example), or appears that it might have some notability (Drumheller Municipal Airport) but not sourced. Others like Banff Airport (now at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Banff Airport) had a source but really didn't seem to prove notability.
- Over the last five years I haven't had access to the Canada Flight Supplement so I haven't been able to keep these updated. I'm not going to create any more of these stub articles but will create redirects to the lists. I'm a bit surprised that nobody has asked about this before. I've completed every province and territory except for Alberta and Ontario. CambridgeBayWeather (#1 deranged), Uqaqtuq (talk), Huliva 17:38, 26 November 2025 (UTC)
- Forgot to tag Revirvlkodlaku. CambridgeBayWeather (#1 deranged), Uqaqtuq (talk), Huliva 17:39, 26 November 2025 (UTC)

Deletion discussion about Banff Airport
[edit]Hello CambridgeBayWeather, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.
While your contributions are appreciated, I wanted to let you know that I've started a discussion about whether an article that you created, Banff Airport, should be deleted, as I am not sure that it is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia in its current form. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Banff Airport.
Deletion discussions usually run for seven days and are not votes. Our guide about effectively contributing to such discussions is worth a read. The most common issue in these discussions is notability, but it's not the only aspect that may be discussed; read the nomination and any other comments carefully before you contribute to the discussion. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.
If you have any questions, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|TheLongTone}}. And don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~ . Thanks!

- Starting on November 4, the IP addresses of logged-out editors are no longer being publicly displayed. Instead, they will have a temporary account associated with their edits.
- Administrators will now find that Special:MergeHistory is now significantly more flexible about what it can merge. It can now merge sections taken from the middle of the history of the source (rather than only the start) and insert revisions anywhere in the history of the destination page (rather than only the start). - The December 2025 administrator elections are scheduled from Nov 25 – Dec 15.
- An Articles for Creation backlog drive is happening in December 2025, with over 1,000 drafts awaiting review from the past two months. Administrators' newsletter – January 2026
[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2025).
- All general sanctions imposed by the community may now be enforced at the Arbitration Enforcement noticeboard (WP:AE) as a result of a recent RfC.
- Due to the result of a recent RFC, the administrator recall process is amended to extend the deadline for a re-request for adminship to 30 days or the next administrator election, whichever is later.
- Changes to the Access to Temporary Account IP Addresses Policy's disclosure rules include broadening the consecutive-blocks exception to cover all admin actions and removing the requirement to revision-delete permissible disclosures once they become unnecessary (instead requiring only their removal). See WP:TAIVDISCLOSE for more information.
- Following the 2025 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been elected to the Arbitration Committee: Aoidh, Asilvering, Girth Summit, Guerillero, HJ Mitchell, HouseBlaster, Izno, Sdrqaz, SilverLocust.

[edit]We say the Irish, the French, the Koreans, the English. Your removal of "the" Inuit doesn't make sense. Masterhatch (talk) 09:55, 19 January 2026 (UTC)
- Did you look at the reference I gave in the summary? Inuk, Inuit (Linguistic recommendation from the Translation Bureau) and quoting from there: "Since Inuit means "the people" in Inuktitut, do not use the definite article “the” or the word “people” in combination with Inuit:" Now there may well be other style guides that say it's OK to do that but at this point I haven't seen anything to the contrary. CambridgeBayWeather (#1 deranged), Uqaqtuq (talk), Huliva 10:01, 19 January 2026 (UTC)
- I just remembered that there was a minor and inconclusive discussion (non-binding and not necessarily reflecting a sitewide consensus) at Talk:Inuit/Archive 3. In some places it doesn't make sense to remove the extra "the" and I tried not to. CambridgeBayWeather (#1 deranged), Uqaqtuq (talk), Huliva 10:07, 19 January 2026 (UTC)
- I did look at it. It says "recommendation". Also, Wikipedia is not a reconciliation website. We commonly say "the Inuit". Some of the "the"s you removed read ok, but others leave the sentence reading funny. Masterhatch (talk) 10:07, 19 January 2026 (UTC)
- I never said it was anything to do with reconciliation. Where di you get that idea? I'm just following a style recommendation exactly the same as editors do when they follow the recommendations given in the Wikipedia:Manual of Style. In this case there is no guidance given in the MOS so an external guide is what I'm using. Is there another guide that you know of with an alternative usage? What about sticking an s on the end of the already plural Inuit or saying "Inuit people" ("the real people people)? These are also covered in that guide but not by our own internal MOS. CambridgeBayWeather (#1 deranged), Uqaqtuq (talk), Huliva 10:18, 19 January 2026 (UTC)
- The second paragraph of the link you used to justify the removal of "the" says "A concern for reconciliation and inclusivity requires that, when referring to Indigenous persons, we use the terms preferred by the community. Thus, we refer to the traditional inhabitants of Canada's northern regions and Arctic coastline by the terms Inuk and Inuit." That's where I got that "the" is being dropped for reconcilation. Anyways, it's not a big deal for me. I just saw that the sentences read strangley without "the" and I was trying to inquire why you were removing "the"s from multiple articles (your edits are always coming across my watch list and this was the first head scratcher). Masterhatch (talk) 10:34, 19 January 2026 (UTC)
- I never really paid attention to that part. I was more interested in using the correct English version. After all the years up here I'm not always sure that I'm using any proper English or a mixture of British, Canadian or Canadian Arctic English. CambridgeBayWeather (#1 deranged), Uqaqtuq (talk), Huliva 10:47, 19 January 2026 (UTC)

Try unprot
[edit]Please tryunprot at Anita Sarkeesian a page you extended confirmed protected eight years ago. I think the reasoning is obsolete Czarking0 (talk) 02:59, 30 January 2026 (UTC)
- The protection came about because of the ongoing Gamergate controversy, see Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/GamerGate. Some editors were blocked for their edits, Wikipedia:Arbitration enforcement log/2014 and Wikipedia:Arbitration enforcement log/2015 (search for Anita Sarkeesian). Eventually, Ymblanter used extended confirmed protection (ECP) as per the arbitration, Wikipedia:Arbitration enforcement log/2016#Page-level sanctions. Due to an edit war I fully protected the page but when I unprotected it I accidentally forgot to restore the ECP and did so later when it was pointed out, User talk:CambridgeBayWeather/Archive49#Regarding Recent Full Protection Action and the section below that. However, I don't see that the arbitration enforcement has been set aside so I won't remove the protection at this time. You appear to be extended confirmed so you should be able to edit the page. Speedy deletion nomination of Binder Pal Fateh
[edit]
A tag has been placed on Binder Pal Fateh requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section R2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect from the article namespace to a different namespace except the Category, Template, Wikipedia, Help, or Portal namespaces.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.

- Due to the result of a recent motion, a rough consensus of administrators at the arbitration enforcement noticeboard may impose an expanded topic ban on Israel, Israelis, Jews, Judaism, Palestine, Palestinians, Islam, and/or Arabs, if an editor's Arab-Israeli conflict topic ban is determined to be insufficient to prevent disruption. At least one diff per area expanded into should be cited.

Template:Nuba peoples
[edit]Hello. I'm writing because I noticed that several years ago, on May 22, 2023, you deleted a template about the Nuba ethnic groups (Template:Nuba peoples). Was there a specific reason for this? I initially thought creating that template could be useful, but I discovered it existed in the past but had been deleted. Isinbill (talk) 21:29, 22 February 2026 (UTC)
- It wasn't a template but a redirect. What I deleted consisted of the following:
- #REDIRECT [[Nuba peoples]]
- {{Redirect category shell|
- {{R from move}}
- }}
- This is how the template looked when it was moved from Nuba peoples to Template:Nuba peoples. In neither of the above cases was it a template but an article and Wikipedia doesn't redirect from templates to articles. Here's an example of a proper template {{Inuit}}. Cheers. Legislature in infobox
[edit]Hi CambridgeBayWeather, I just changed Legislative Assembly” to “Legislature” in the Nunavut infobox, and it came up red-lined. I will do an article on the legislature as soon as I can (I’m on the road this week). Reason is that constitutionally the assembly is not the legislature. Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 22:32, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
- Can you not just move Legislative Assembly of Nunavut to Legislature of Nunavut? CambridgeBayWeather (#1 deranged), Uqaqtuq (talk), Huliva 22:42, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
- The Legislative Assembly is not the same thing as the Legislature, just like the House of Commons is not the same thing as Parliament. So, would have to re-write the Legislative Assembly article extensively to give it the new name. Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 03:26, 24 February 2026 (UTC)

I hope it's not too cold up there. I see you have edited Courtenay, British Columbia in the past. Would you have a moment to look at the edit history? I'd rather not keep reverting what appears to be unsourced original research by an IP. A second set of eyes would be much appreciated. Maybe I'm missing something. Thanks! Magnolia677 (talk) 20:23, 28 February 2026 (UTC)
- Definitely OR and unsourced. There were statement that are probably true but without a source. I was amused by the idea that summer in Courtenay is dry but without comparing it anything. Also noted that the driest month 26.7 mm (1.05 in) is about the same as our wettest month 28.0 mm (1.10 in). The entire paragraph consisted of unsourced statements.
- By the way this has been one of the coldest winters in years. We've had 3 - 4 weeks with daily temperatures dropping below {{cvt}-40|C}} and wind chills dropping to -60. School closed for a full week. Municipal services off the roads. It's been throughout the whole north. CambridgeBayWeather (#1 deranged), Uqaqtuq (talk), Huliva 08:01, 1 March 2026 (UTC)
- Funny. Here in SE Sask, we've had a very, very warm winter. Funny how that works. Masterhatch (talk) 09:04, 1 March 2026 (UTC)
- Lucky. It's supposed to go back to −44 °C (−47 °F) today. It's −35 °C (−31 °F) right now as we just had a blizzard but at least the temperature was only −25 °C (−13 °F) during that. I notice that even Edmonton has been cold. CambridgeBayWeather (#1 deranged), Uqaqtuq (talk), Huliva 09:08, 1 March 2026 (UTC)
