History

Moorepay was founded in November 1966 by Sandy Nicol under the name Douglas Moore Limited, initially offering outsourced payroll services to employers in the United Kingdom. In the early nineties the company changed its name to Moorepay Limited and acquired local payroll bureau's CCS, ACT, Barclays Bank Payroll Services, CMS Bristol and Paymaster.

In 2004, the business was acquired by Rebus for approximately £44 million, marking a steady expansion into HR consultancy and compliance services. In 2007, Moorepay acquired First Business Support Ltd, strengthening its employment law and HR advisory functions. Later that decade, the Rebus Group was acquired by Northgate Information Solutions, which integrated its operations into what later became known as NGA Human Resources.

The company launched its first cloud-based payroll and HR platform, MoorepayHR, in 2012, providing online tools for payroll management, reporting, and HR administration. The following year, it became the first payroll provider to receive the Payroll Assurance Scheme accreditation from the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP), recognising high standards in payroll governance and compliance..

In 2018, Bain Capital acquired NGA Human Resources’ UK and Ireland operations, including Moorepay, creating the Zellis Group . Later that year, Moorepay announced a £100 million investment in Greater Manchester, opening a new hub in Lowry Mill, Salford, to support the company’s long-term growth .

By 2021, Moorepay launched its Next Generation payroll and HR platform, a system that integrated mobile employee self-service and analytics tools. The company also introduced its People Analytics suite and a mobile app for employees .

In 2023, Moorepay acquired Natural HR, a Birmingham-based cloud HR software company . The acquisition allowed Moorepay to integrate a wider range of HR capabilities including performance management, recruitment and employee engagement tools, into its existing payroll platform.

The following year, Apax Partners announced its acquisition of Zellis Group, including Moorepay, from Bain Capital . After the acquisition, Moorepay continued to invest in product development and sustainability, achieving a silver medal from EcoVadis in both 2024 and 2025, placing the company among the top 15% of rated organisations for sustainability performance.

In 2025, the Zellis Group expanded its portfolio with the acquisition of Hastee, a financial wellbeing platform designed to provide earned wage access and improve employee financial resilience .

Today, Moorepay operates as part of the Zellis Group, alongside Benefex and Zellis Enterprise, collectively serving over five million employees each month. Together, Zellis Group pays one in six employees in the UK.
