Clean-up and Improvement of this Article

[edit]

This is an important article, but it could really use a top-to-bottom revamp. I've been going through and attending to some of the more glaring grammar issues, but the content needs to be reshaped by someone with more expertise on the subject than I possess. As it currently stands, it is written from a profoundly POV perspective which uses emotional language to describe the "Tea Tribes" and their circumstances. At the same time, it is clearly written from an outsider's perspective, which is fine, but some of the terminology used ("these people") sounds rather patronizing. One gets the impression that the writer is loath to call them "Tea Tribes" but doesn't have another term to replace it ("Adivasi," maybe? Or perhaps "Assamese Adivasi" to distinguish them from the Adivasi in the rest of India?" Again, the attention of an expert on this subject would be really helpful). I am also skeptical of the "Physical Characteristics" section, which hearkens backs to an archaic system of racial and typical classification. For instance, members of the Tea Tribes are described as "strong." Surely members of any ethnicity can be strong, just as they can be weak; we can't classify whole ethnicities along the lines of broad generalizations that don't correspond to reality.

I think this article has potential and a lot of basic information that can be salvaged and reshaped for a much crisper, less biased presentation. Furthermore, in light of the recent violence in Assam, it's an important subject that deserves proper treatment.Tigercompanion25 (talk) 00:01, 25 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

While this article needs complete revamp, it cannot be done in one-go as it will take a long time. Large portions of the article do not have citations. Finding the right citations and correcting errors in the sentences are also time-consuming process. How can this be done without someone considering it vandalism and reverting changes? Name of Article

[edit]

"Tea garden community of Assam" is correct name for the article as So called tea tribe are not entirely tribal or Scheduled Tribes people as it also includes several Scheduled Caste, Other Backward Castes and other. SO these caste population as tribe is incorrect. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dev0745 (talkcontribs) 07:12, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Article has been moved now. – Uanfala (talk) 12:50, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The tea tribes were Adivasis from Central India who were duped and brought to Assam to become indentured labourers. Census records and colonial labour reports hardly mentions any SC or OBC communities who were brought in this manner to work in the tea plantations. Due to political contentions, the Assam government does not give them reservations or protection under the ST quota and only lately classify them under SC or OBC quotas. @Dev0745, @Uanfala, @Fylindfotberserk
current article title:
  • Tea-garden community
redirects:
Issues:
Should the current title be retained, or should it be changed to something like Tea garden community of Assam Province or Tea garden community of Northeast India? This is because readers and editors often interpret it as referring solely to the present-day Assam state.
If this title is retained, the content should also be rewritten to address these historical and geographical facts.

@MaxA-Matrix: Tea garden community of Northeast India is better of the two, though there is a large tea-garden migrant community in northern West Bengal. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 13:02, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
How about Tea garden community of Northeastern India? A geographical term instead of the political term Northeast India which includes north Bengal (both east and west). ~ MaxA-Matrix 🗨 03:44, 27 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MaxA-Matrix: I also agree that the article is about Tea garden community of Assam. Dev0745 (talk) 12:54, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I believe that the page should be renamed as Tea tribes of Assam for the following reason: first, the title "tea garden community" is ambiguous as it may be have to include the managers and owners living in the "garden" itself. Second, the Assam government now officially uses the term "tea tribes" without hyphenation in official documents and circulars. Third, though the Assam Province during the British Raj did consist of other states created thereafter, the tea gardens were largely in the valleys which still come under Assam. In places the British annexed tribal foothills and made them into tea gardens with are now part of Assam. Fourth, the tea labourers of North Bengal have a different history both colonial and present. They even produce a different variety of tea. Therefore, they merit a page on their own. Astra Travasso (talk) 10:26, 26 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
