Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is an upcoming Lego-themed action-adventure game developed by Traveller's Tales and published by Warner Bros. Games. It is the fourth installment in the Lego Batman video game series, and features an original story inspired by comic books, films and other media from the Batman franchise.

Legacy of the Dark Knight began development following several difficulties during development of Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga as well as the cancellation of several other projects, and takes heavy inspiration from Batman: Arkham, another series of Batman video games. Announced at Gamescom in 2025, it is set to be released on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on May 22, 2026, with a version for Nintendo Switch 2 scheduled for a later date.

Gameplay

[edit]

Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is an action-adventure game played from a third-person perspective, alternating between various action-adventure sequences and puzzle-solving scenarios.[1] The game can be played solo, or with another player through local multiplayer.[2] DC Comics president Jim Lee described Legacy of the Dark Knight as "a love letter to the world of Batman",[3] with the game featuring an original story that incorporates different elements from various Batman-related media,[4] including films, television series, comic books, and other video games.[5][6] For example, the character skins are taken from Batman comics and adaptations,[7] with some of them based on the likeness of the actors who played the characters in live-action projects, such as Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman and Danny DeVito's Penguin from the film Batman Returns (1992), Heath Ledger's Joker from The Dark Knight (2008), and Jeffrey Wright's Jim Gordon from The Batman (2022).[8][9]

Unlike previous Lego video games, which allowed players to control hundreds of different characters, Legacy of the Dark Knight includes only seven playable characters: Batman, Jim Gordon, Batgirl, Nightwing, Robin, Catwoman, and Talia al Ghul, each possessing unique skills and gadgets.[10][11] For example, Catwoman is able to use a whip as a weapon, while Gordon has a gun that sprays foam.[12] The game is set in an open-world Lego version of Gotham City, with players tasked with exploring the city and engaging in combat, which has been compared to that of the Batman: Arkham series.[1][13][14] Players can also customize the Batcave to display a variety of vehicles—such as the Batmobile and the Batcycle, among others—and Batsuits, as well as trophies and additional items that can be collected throughout the game.[15]

Premise

[edit]

Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight retells the story of Bruce Wayne / Batman from his origin as a trainee with the League of Shadows, to becoming a hero of Gotham City. The game is expected to feature a large ensemble of characters drawn from the history of Batman comics. The main playable characters are Batman and his allies, Jim Gordon, Batgirl, Nightwing, Robin, Catwoman, and Talia al Ghul.[10][11] Other allies of Batman include Alfred Pennyworth and Lucius Fox.[16] Supervillain members of Batman's rogues gallery include the Joker, the Penguin, Poison Ivy, Ra's al Ghul,[15] Bane,[1][13] Two-Face, Mr. Freeze, Firefly,[17] the Condiment King,[18] the Riddler, Egghead,[16] Kite Man, and Carmine Falcone and his daughter Sofia.[19] Additional characters include Bruce's parents Thomas and Martha, and Gillian B. Loeb.[16] The character Bat-Mite is also confirmed to appear, in which he will run a shop where players can buy new suits and items to customize the Batcave.[18]

Development

[edit]

TT Games experienced difficulties in the five year development of their previous title, 2022's Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. It was delayed multiple times and a report from Polygon detailed extensive crunch at the studio, bullying, gender discrimination and high staff turnover.[20] By the time The Skywalker Saga released in April, developers were experiencing burnout.[21] In March 2023, it was reported that multiple internal projects at TT Games had been canceled. One project was a Lego Disney game known internally as "Project Marley" that was canceled in 2022 after being in-development for four years. Featuring characters from Disney properties like Frozen, Toy Story and Pirates of the Caribbean, TT Games struggled with the game's direction.[21] A project based on Guardians of the Galaxy was in development for 18 months before being scrapped.[22]

Bloomberg News reporter Jason Schreier claimed in February 2025 that TT Games was working on a Lego game targeting a 2026 release.[23] On April 30, 2026, TT Games announced that Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight had "gone gold" as development work had been finished.[24]

Gameplay design

[edit]

Matthew Wood served as lead designer on Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight.[25] The game takes heavy inspiration from the Batman: Arkham series' freeflow combat system, though it has been adapted to be more approachable. Rather than trying to replicate Arkham's technical depth, Legacy of the Dark Knight encourages players to use a combination of abilities and gadgets like batarangs and environmental actions. Traversal across Gotham City can be done through grappling hooks, gliding, and vehicles like the Batmobile.[26] The decision to feature a smaller roster of seven playable characters compared to previous Lego games was informed by wanting to focus on deeper gameplay systems with each character having their own distinct abilities.[27]

Technology

[edit]

For Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga (2022), TT Games developed their own proprietary NTT engine but it proved difficult to work with. TT Games leadership had debated whether the studio should abandon their proprietary engine and switch to Unreal Engine during The Skywalker Saga's development; following its release, the studio was quick to move to Unreal Engine 5 for the development of Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight.[28] While TT Games had previously created an open world Gotham in Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (2012), strategic director Jonathan Smith credited advances in technology for enabling "a much more immersive city than we were ever able to do before" with the scale of the game being "bigger than the other titles we've made in the past".[29][30] Visual fidelity has been increased in Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight to better represent the features of physical Lego pieces such as the microscopic imperfections and texture of the plastic in minifigures and the cloth texture of capes. These add visual interest to blocky Lego bricks that are set together with non-Lego elements such as road tarmac.[31]

Audio

[edit]

During the game's reveal at Gamescom's Opening Night Live on August 19, 2025, Matt Berry was announced to be voicing Bane, inspired by Tom Hardy's performance from The Dark Knight Rises (2012).[1][13] Later that same week, Batman was revealed to be voiced by Shai Matheson.[32]

Release

[edit]

Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight was originally scheduled for release on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on May 29, 2026, with the Nintendo Switch 2 version to be launched later.[33] On March 16, 2026, it was announced that the release date was being brought forward a week to May 22.[a][35][36] Knowing that the company wanted to target a spring release, TT Games's head of production Jonathan Smith expressed relief over "hav[ing] some space" around the game's release date after Grand Theft Auto VI's delay from May to November.[37]
