KOLV is a country music radio station licensed to Olivia, Minnesota broadcasting on 100.1 FM. KOLV serves the areas of Willmar, Minnesota, Redwood Falls, Minnesota, and Montevideo, Minnesota, and is owned by Bold Radio, Inc.[2]
History
[edit]KOLV was authorized in 1982, when the Federal Communications Commission granted Olivia Broadcasting Company a construction permit for a new FM station in Olivia on 101.7 MHz, with 3,000 watts ERP and an antenna height above average terrain of 276 feet.[3] The station began operation in June 1983 under George and Ruby Blum.[4] George Blum, a longtime Upper Midwest broadcaster, and his wife Ruby built KOLV-FM with their sons Chuck and Phillip after previous ownership and management work at stations in Wyoming, North Dakota, Montana, and Wisconsin.[5]
KOLV originally operated on 101.7 MHz. A 1991 listing in FMedia! showed KOLV on 101.7 MHz with 3,400 watts, licensed to Olivia Broadcasting Company, and using the slogan "At Your Service".[6] In 1993, the station was granted a construction permit to increase power to 6,000 watts at 87 meters HAAT.[7]
The station moved to 100.1 MHz as part of an FCC allotment proceeding involving Sauk Rapids and Olivia. To allow WHMH-FM in Sauk Rapids to upgrade from Channel 269A to Channel 269C2, the FCC substituted Channel 261A for Channel 269A at Olivia and modified KOLV's license to specify operation on Channel 261A. The change became effective July 25, 1994.[8] A 1995 FMedia! listing identified KOLV as operating on 100.1 MHz, "from 101.7", with a 10,000-watt Class C3 grant.[9]
In 1998, George and Ruby Blum's Olivia Broadcasting Company sold KOLV to Bold Radio Inc. of Mankato for $335,000. Broadcasting & Cable identified the buyer's principals as Lynn C. Ketelsen, John Linder and Steve Linder, and described KOLV's format as country and farm programming.[10] Radio Business Report also reported the $335,000 transaction.[11]
Later in 1998, KOLV applied to upgrade to 50,000 watts, a change that was expected to bring Willmar and Hutchinson into the station's primary coverage area.[12]
KOLV later became known as Big Country 100.1. The City of Olivia describes KOLV as the community's only local radio station, noting that it began in Olivia, operates as Big Country 100.1, remains part of the Lakeland Broadcasting Group in Willmar, maintains a local studio in Olivia, and is used for winter snow emergency announcements.[13] Lakeland Media LLC formally closed on its purchase of KOLV from Bold Radio on April 5, 2024, after already operating the station through a local marketing agreement.[14]
