Golovnino (Russian: Головнино) is a village on the southern tip of Kunashir, the southernmost of the Kuril Islands. During Japanese rule it was known as Tomari (Japanese: 泊村, Hepburn: Tomari-mura) and was the administrative seat of Kunashiri District.
Toponymy
[edit]The village was originally named Tomari, an Ainu word meaning "bay". Following the Soviets' occupation of the Kuril Islands, the village was renamed Golovnino in honour of Vasily Golovnin, a Russian explorer of the far east who had been imprisoned in Japan from 1811 to 1813 in the Golovnin Incident.
