The Honourable Justice Elizabeth Bennett is a judge of the Federal Court of Australia, sitting in the Melbourne registry. She was appointed on 20 December 2024 after practice at the Victorian Bar, where she was appointed Senior Counsel in 2021.[1][2]

Education and career

Bennett graduated from Monash University with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) in 2003 and was admitted as a legal practitioner in Victoria in 2005. She practised as a solicitor at Allens before signing the Victorian Bar Roll in 2009. She was appointed Senior Counsel in 2021 and served as Vice-President of the Victorian Bar in 2023 and 2024, and briefly as President in 2024.[1][3][4][5]

Judicial service

Bennett was appointed a judge of the Federal Court on 20 December 2024.[1][2] A ceremonial sitting to welcome her was held in Melbourne on 19 February 2025 and the transcript is published by the Court.[6] The Australian Government Directory records her commission commencing on 20 December 2024.[7] The Law Institute of Victoria also published an address given at the ceremony.[8]
