First steps tutorial

Wikibooks is for freely-licensed collaboratively-developed textbooks.
You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing and assume good faith about the intentions of others. Remember, this is a wiki, so you're allowed to change just about anything, and changes can be made easily. Come introduce yourself to everyone, and let us know what interests you.

Getting help

• See the Wikibooks help pages for common issues, or read Using Wikibooks for a more user-friendly introduction to the project.
• Remember, every edit is saved, so if you make mistakes, you can revert to an earlier version if needed.
• Get help from the community in the user assistance room or in our IRC channel.
• Files must be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, unless they are copyrighted and need to be uploaded here under fair use. If you need to upload a fair use file, you may request permission to do so. Please be sure to provide the required {{information}}: a license tag and source are always required; fair use images require a {{fair use rationale}}.

Goodies, tips and tricks

• Please fill in the edit summary and preview your edits before saving.
• Sign your name on discussion pages by typing ~~~~
• User scripts can make many tasks easier. Look at the Gadgets tab of my preferences; check off the boxes for the scripts you want, and hit save!

Made a mistake?

• Please make sure you follow our naming policy - modules should be named like Book Title/Chapter Title.
• Need to rename a page? Use the move tab (only becomes available once your account is 4 days old - until then, ask for help).
• To get a page deleted, add {{delete|your reason for requesting deletion}} to the top of the page.
• If something you wrote was deleted, please read the deletion policy, and check the deletion log to find out why. Also check the RFD archives if applicable. You can request undeletion at WB:RFU, or ask the administrator who deleted the page.

When I edit tutorials I try to seperate everything into smaller units with good spacing, line flow, and headings; so that the average noob, by reading one small step at a time, can follow it. If their is more than one way to do somthing, and someone has taken the time to write steps in a way that is not like a discussion (must be in 3rd person ) then I will keep them in the main page, and differeniate them as method 1, method 2, etc, otherwise it's going to the discussion page, with the rest of the user discussion, and Q&A, that I find on the main page. Maybe you could ask for editor rights at WB:RFP before you are autopromoted. I did the same thing. As we all know that you are a good user, we can trust that you will not do any malicious editing. Undeleted Images

Hi Pearts,

I don't think these actually qualify as freely licensed by virtue of being screenshots from GPL'd software. These icons appear to be original creations using Blender, but are not really something you'd see in Blender without inserting considerable original creativity. Of course, I had no way of knowing that until they were undeleted.

If we allowed the argument that anything created in Blender counted as a screenshot, I think we'd be crossing a line. Do you know who really created these images? All we really know is who uploaded them originally.

My recommendation is that someone (you being the ideal candidate) create replacement images and upload those to the Commons. This just seems too dodgy. --Jomegat (talk) 12:52, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

Actually half of the images that are of the logo, already had the "free to use" attributions and are over at the commons already... it's just these few that where left out in the cold. Pearts (talk) 12:56, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

OK! I'm willing to let them stand then. I still think it would be a good idea to move them to the Commons though. The only images we allow here are "fair use", and those require a rationale. Of course it's impossible to copy them over if they are deleted, but that's been taken care of now. Thanks again! --Jomegat (talk) 12:58, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

I have a deal with admin Adrignola, whenever he/she sees a catagory called blender 3d screenshots pop up, with "move to commons" as the only reason for creation, he/she will get them moved enmass, as his/her time permits. Their are alot of miscatagorized blender 3d screen shots that are still floating around here at wikibooks, but as I work thru the pages, I am getting them moved. Technically Blender screenshots with original work in them need to be marked as GPL and the license for the original work present in them. If I had been a stickler for that with all the screenshots moved to Commons, maybe half the images used in one of our most popular books would have been deleted. I've looked at existing screenshots at Commons and the admins there are not very strict on that either. But now that they are moved to Commons, the admins can deal with them if/as necessary. – Adrignola talk 13:15, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

We welcome and appreciate your contributions, but some of your recent actions differ from the way things are normally done at Wikibooks. Using Wikibooks can be helpful in learning more about conventions. When using certain templates on talk pages, don't forget to substitute with text by adding subst: to the template tag. For example, use {{subst:bigwelcome}} instead of {{bigwelcome}}. This reduces server load and prevents accidental blanking of the template. Thank you – Adrignola talk 00:15, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
