Oh, well, actually that's already been taken care of on-wiki. The relevant subjects were added to History of Hawaii. The pages are semi-protected for the very reason that new users would mistakenly think they have to edit the listing page. The page users visit when they click "browse" at left has a link to information on adding a book to the relevant subjects, but it can be overlooked. – Adrignola discuss 20:02, 5 November 2011 (UTC)

Bot request

I'm finding that an awful lot of edits done these days to the Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter are users answering the study questions. I don't know if it will do any good, but I'm thinking that it might be useful to add a comment right in or under the question subtitle line that says something like "Study questions are meant to be left for each student to answer; please don't answer them here." With WhiteKnight's decreasing activity, I don't know who's running bots any more; who would I talk to? Chazz (talk) 01:44, 9 November 2011 (UTC)

Template:Subject page

I'm trying to understand parameter {{{subject}}}. I see technically what it does, but for what I'm hacking together, I need to understand why. Is it used anywhere? And is/was it mean to cover any contingencies that do not now occur? --Pi zero (discuss • contribs) 00:34, 19 November 2011 (UTC)

It allows you to create a listing that does not match up to the current {{PAGENAME}}. It allows for the possibility of a case where the subject page name doesn't match the subject category name. I'm unaware of any current uses that make use of the parameter. – Adrignola discuss 01:40, 19 November 2011 (UTC)

Wikijunior subject pages

When you deleted page "Subject:Wikijunior" in April 2010, your edit summary said, in part, "listing would need to be vetted by hand for children". My guess at what you were driving at, there, is that if kids looked at an automatically generated subject page, anybody could insinuate any page in the whole wiki into what kids see, just by adding it to one of those Wikijunior subject categories. Is that right, or is there something else I'm missing (or both)?

If that's the issue, I suggest a simple solution: Wikijunior subject pages can limit their DPLs to sighted pages in Wikijunior space. This is pretty much isomorphic to the way Wikinews handles publication: published articles have to be in mainspace, sighted, and in Category:Published. It would guarantee that no child looking at a Wikijunior subject page would see anything that wasn't already visible and approved on Wikijunior. --Pi zero (discuss • contribs) 04:50, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

You've understood correctly. Your proposal sounds good and it is not something I was familiar with at the time, since I don't contribute to Wikinews and didn't have knowledge of that option with DPLs. This would then eliminate any frustrations with new Wikijunior books not being listed on Wikijunior. Those are interesting directions to pursue. {{{subject}}} parameter to {{subject page}} and {{root subject}}

Would you object if I removed this parameter entirely?

How I got to this point:

• I've confirmed that there is in fact no subject on the project that uses the parameter (here).
• I've been trying to allow for the parameter in the allbooks code I've been writing, though it's been significantly complicating my code.
• Then yesterday I finally realized that the pre-existing logic for the parameter —before I even got into this— actually wouldn't work if we ever wanted it (unless, of course, I'm still misunderstanding what it's for; see below). Even without my code, it would require a more elaborate, and therefore error-prone, arrangement of manual parameters to make it work. And my allbooks code, which is supposed to make maintenance easy by figuring out what problems there are and how to fix them, would have even more of a tangle to deal with.

Did you have in mind a particular sort of situation in which this would be useful? If so, I'm hoping we could find a different way to allow for it. --Pi zero (discuss • contribs) 14:00, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

I have no objections. You've confirmed what I suspected, in that it is not used. It would be confusing to have a subject page showing books from a category that doesn't align with its title anyway.
