[edit | edit source]Black plays the usual Caro-Kann move, 2...d5, supported by the pawn on c6.
White may continue:
3. exd5, which after 3...cxd5 4. d4 Nc6 transposes into an exchange variation, normally seen in the move order 2. d4 d5 3. exd5 cxd5 4. Nf3 Nc6. Alternatively, 4. Ne5!? is the Apocalypse attack.
3. Nc3, which transposes into the two knights attack otherwise seen in the move order 2. Nc3 d5 3. Nf3.
3. d3 is the endgame offer line otherwise seen in the Breyer variation (1. e4 c5 2. d3). After 3...dxe4, 4. dxe4 Qxd1+ 5. Kxd1 goes into a queenless middlegame, or 4. Ng5!? goes into a sharp gambit.
