Abuse by UN peacekeepers a “cancer”

In war-torn countries, women and girls are raising children, fathered by UN troops who abused or exploited them.

Deployed to protect and rescue, instead troops are accused of rape and sexual exploitation.

A Washington Post investigation states the UN even has a name for these children: Peacekeeper babies.

A 14-year-old in Bangui, Central African Republic tells the Post a Burundian soldier dragged her into his barracks and raped her, leaving her pregnant with the baby boy.

Since the UN peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic began in 2014, its employees have been formally accused of sexually abusing or exploiting 42 local civilians, most of them underage girls.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called sexual abuse by peacekeepers “a cancer in our system”

Pokemon Go Crosses 100 Million Downloads in a Month on Google Play

The world is not the same as it was a month ago. If you don’t believe us, just look outside your window. You will see people roaming around, staring at trees and roads, and then back down at their smartphones. All thanks to one game – Pokemon Go – and its success continues to grow.

The augmented reality game based on a decades-old franchise has achieved another record feat and that too in such a small time frame that all rival app developers will be left feeling envious. The game has crossed 100 million downloads on Google Play in month. It should be noted that these figures do not take into account those users who sideloaded the app, and only those that downloaded the app when it officially arrived for their region.

AMD Radeon RX 460 Launched in India Starting at Rs. 11,990

Just days after making the Radeon RX 470 officially available, AMD has released its smaller sibling, the Radeon RX 460. Graphics cards based on this new GPU will be available in phases, with 2GB models hitting markets from the 15th of August onwards and 4GB versions in early September. AMD’s suggested retail prices for India are Rs. 11,990 for 2GB cards and Rs. 13,490 for 4GB cards, however board partners will set their own pricing and are likely to offer models with custom fans and circuitry at somewhat higher prices.

Unlike the RX 470 and RX 480 before it which are both based on the Polaris-10 GPU design with different amounts of resources enabled in hardware, the new Radeon RX 460 uses a smaller chip called Polaris-11. As a result, Radeon RX 460 cards do not need any auxilliary power connectors and can run on nothing more than the 75W provided by any motherboard. Radeon RX 460 cards from board partners including Asus, MSI, XFX, Gigabyte and Sapphire are expected to have smaller coolers and be able to fit comfortably into small-form-factor PCs.

Just. Keep. Writing.

Hey there, lovelies!

I know it’s been awhile since I posted. I’ve spent the last few months buried under deadlines and finishing up coursework–so far this year I’ve gone to grad school, and written and edited THREE books, all coming out next year–and getting ready to head back to Nashville.

But in the slivers of space between, I’ve been reflecting a lot–about writing, publishing, advice–and I wanted to talk about a piece of advice that I know seems trite, but is honestly the best I can give. I’ll try to explain why.

Five years into my publishing career, I finally feel like I have my feet under me, and because of that, I’m often asked for advice.

When writers–aspiring, debut, and established–ask for insight, I always say, “Just keep writing.”

And I know that sounds like a very Dory thing to say, but the fact of the matter is, if…

Serial kid-producer reveals top 10 reasons not to have kids

Great

barbtaub's avatarBarb Taub

Too much of a good thing can be wonderful.

imgresI was lying awake last night, trying to memorize the feeling of everything being right with my family. We’re all healthy, happy, and remarkably satisfied with where we are in life at this exact moment. Even Child #4 has just taken her last ever Uni final, and pronounced herself ready to go off the family payroll.

A friend asked if I ever regretted having so many kids, or the time/money/everything that it took to raise them. She said her book club (having dispensed with the required 8.5 minutes of book-related discussion) were all talking about the reasons their grown children were not producing grandchildren.

That reminded me of this blast-from-the-past I wrote a few years ago.

Top 10 reasons not to have kids

There are actually LOTS of reasons not to have kids. As a serial kid-producer, I offer a revised list:

When did Australia start its terminal decline into a boring dystopia?

piratespobox's avatarpiratespobox

Australia was once considered “the lucky country”. We sold dirt to every continent and received all the fancy household goods and nick knacks we could possibly desire. Those other nations never bothered us because we were too stupid to be a threat, and we kept dealing the lovely cheap dirt out like a donkey following a carrot. What happened to those fruitful years of plenty? What happened to the seemingly endless economic prosperity that fuelled our first world society? Well, like most failed civilisations, Australians and the Australians who ran Australia were particularly too stupid. You probably have all the crazy ideas and common sense to see why we are screwed as a nation but I want to alert you only to the tipping point toward our decline.

The point at which this country made a turn for the worse was simply when Pizza-Hut restaurants started closing their doors. You…
