Activate hearing aid in AirPods Pro 2 in Spain with devices bought abroad

Hello,

I'm trying to help my father in law with his hearing loss. We are in Spain, and as the Hearing aid feature is still not available in this country due to medical regulations, I have bought in Amazon the AirPods Pro 2 through the German store, and wanted to configure them using my iPhone bought in Canada last year.

The setting for Hearing Aid does not appear in Settings in my iPhone. So my question is:

  • How does the pair iPhone/AirPods Pro determine the country and the availability of the feature?

I have the possibility to travel to Portugal, which is very near to my home.

  • If I bring the devices there, will I be able to activate the Hearing aid in Portugal, where the regulation does already approve it?
  • Will it disappear when I cross the frontier?

I know he could use a pair of medical hearing aids, but he doesn't want to wear them as they "makes him look old", which of course he is, but, long story short, he doesn't have any problem to watch TV with the AirPods, and even take a walk with them, so we thought to bring them the AirPods Pro.

Please I will very much appreciate your help with this matter, as I really want to help the old man.

Thank you

As I understand it, the part that requires approval by local authorities is the Hearing TEST.

If you have the standard parameters from an Audiologist test, you can enter them and the hearing AID feature (which does NOT require licensing) will work. (The test data strongly resembles a Stereo graphic equalizer pattern.)

Also, your dad's ideas about what Hearing Aids look like are REALLY old and outdated. In the old days, the hearing aid made all the sounds, and sent them through a Tube to a custom ear-mold in your ear.

Today we have two different kinds, both of which are nearly invisible:

• Completely in the ear-canal Hearing Aids, which are completely invisible unless someone looks directly into your ear canal.

• Behind the ear Hearing Aids, now use an almost invisible Wire, and the electronic "speaker" portion is inside your ear canal with a tiny translucent rubber retainer.

Neither of those styles make you seem old. My 30-year old son wears behind the ear models, and you would never know that unless he told you.

What REALLY makes a person seem old, is not being able to hear what is going on.
