Persistent MiFi Hearing Device Pairing with two compatible M chip MacBooks?

This is probably a relatively uncommon use case, but I have a two M chip MacBooks (M4 work MacBook and M3 personal Macbook) that both support MiFi hearing devices. i.e. Each can stream directly from laptop to hearing devices via Bluetooth.

I am well aware from that only one device can connect to hearing devices at a time, but I'm having problems maintaining a persistent pairing state on two MacBooks. After pairing the second MacBook I am no longer able to connect to the first MacBook unless I choose Forget This Device and redo the pairing process of the first MacBook, which in turn messing up the pairing state of the second MacBook.

This is a PITA because during the day, I'd like to be able to stream video conference meetings via the work laptop and then be able to pair with my personal laptop in the evening without having to redo pairing sequence every time I switch.

I know it's possible to have persistent pairing with two MiFi devices. Before I got my new work laptop, my iPhone and personal laptop supported persistent pairing. I just needed to turn off Bluetooth on the phone to connect to the laptop and vice versa. I've only run into this headache when I tried to pair my new work laptop.

Has anyone else ran into this issue and found a workaround? Or have been told this is a known limitation?

Am no expert in this area, yet your post to the community deserves a response.

Seems that to switch hearing-aids effortlessly between Apple devices / computers, they would need to be signed in to the same Apple Account ... wondering if you may have different Apple Accounts for work and for home ?

Else if you use the one Apple Account with each of the two computers : there may be accessibility settings you can use:

Apple support's article for MacOS 26::

Change Hearing Devices settings for accessibility on Mac - Apple Support

Eg: says

"Use Hearing Devices settings to pair Made for iPhone (MFi) hearing aids or sound processors with your Mac and adjust their settings."

"To change these settings, choose Apple menu > System Settings, click Accessibility in the sidebar, then click Hearing Devices. (You may need to scroll down.)

Option: Available Devices

When unpaired hearing devices are in range of your Mac, they appear in the list of available devices. To pair hearing devices with your Mac, move the pointer over the devices, then click Connect. See Pair hearing devices with your Mac.

Option: Control Nearby Devices

When your hearing devices are paired with and connected to another device where you’re signed in to your Apple Account, use Hearing Devices settings on your Mac to adjust the settings for that device (such as an iPhone)."

Wondering whether or not you are using "handoff" between devices, and if that can help:.

Use Handoff to continue tasks on your other devices - Apple Support

Eg: says:

"Set up Handoff

Use Handoff with any Mac, iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch that meets the Continuity system requirements. Handoff works when your devices are near each other and set up as follows.

  • Each device is signed in to iCloud with the same Apple Account. To see the Apple Account used by Apple Watch, open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, then go to General > Apple Account (or Apple ID).
  • Each device has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on.
  • Each device has Handoff turned on:
    • Mac with macOS Ventura or later: Choose Apple menu  > System Settings, click General in the sidebar, then click AirDrop & Handoff on the right. Turn on "Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices".

  • iPhone or iPad: Go to Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity (or AirPlay & Handoff), then turn on Handoff."

If needed there's more info. on using handoff in the above linked artticle.

All the best :-)

Thank you for your reply, and for info. about the two separate Apple Accounts.

Seems that is certain to be why hearing-aids don't switch smoothly between MacBooks.

You may be able to switch between the two Macs manually using the Mac Bluetooth settings : ie: Keep the hearing-aids paired to each Mac

Only one Mac can be in use with hearing aids at a time.

See if it can work for you:

Turn off Bluetooth on the Mac you are not using.

When you intend to switch Macs: Turn off Bluetooth on the Mac you were using.

On the other Mac: Turn on Bluetooth and connect hearing-aids.

____

Else: It may or may not be possible to create a shortcut for the pairing process:

Apple Support's online article: Use Made for iPhone hearing devices - Apple Support

Eg: says:
