Now that’s a happy ending.
Maybe Happy Ending won Best Musical and five other trophies Sunday to lead the 78th annual Tony Awards, and Purpose was named Best Play at Radio City Music Hall in New York.
Darren Criss took Lead Actor in a Musical for Maybe Happy Ending, and Nicole Scherzinger won Actress in a Musical for Sunset Blvd. Succession alum and Emmy winner Sarah Snook won Lead Actress in a Play for her Broadway debut The Picture of Dorian Gray, and Cole Escola won Lead Actor in a Play for their reimagining of Mary Todd Lincoln in Oh, Mary!

Buena Vista Social Club was second with four Tonys tonight, followed by Stranger Things: The First Shadow and Sunset Blvd., which got three each. The only other multiple winners were Purpose, Oh, Mary! and The Picture of Dorian Gray.
Eureka Day won for Best Play Revival, and Sunset Blvd. took Best Musical Revival.

Among other notables, Francis Jue pulled off the first sorta upset of the night, taking Actor in a Featured Role (Play) for Yellow Face. He had been a sentimental favorite, though. Broadway rookie Jak Malone, won Actor in a Featured Role (Musical) for Operation Mincemeat: A New Musical.
Best Direction of a Play went to Sam Pinkleton for Oh, Mary!, his first career win and the show’s first of the night. Michael Arden followed that with a Tony for Best Direction of a Musical for Maybe Happy Ending, his third.
Cynthia Erivo hosted the main ceremony after a 90-minute pre-show. During that pre-show, Buena Vista Social Club took Best Sound Design, Orchestrations and Choreography, and Stranger Things picked up Best Sound Design, Lighting Design and Scenic Design of a Play. The first award of the night went to Maybe Happy Ending for Best Book for a Musical, and it later added Scenic Design and Original Score for a Musical.
Paul Tazewell is having himself quite a year already. He picked up his second career Tony and first in nine years — Costume Design for a Musical (Death Becomes Her) — after he won an Oscar for Wicked in March.

Sunset Blvd. also goy on the board early with a win for Best Lighting Design of a Musical, and The Picture of Dorian Gray won for Best Costume Design of a Play.

Four-time Tony winner Harvey Fierstein received the Lifetime Achievement Award during the pre-show, and Celia Keenan-Bolger picked up the Isabelle Stevenson Award for humanitarian work. The Muny, aka Municipal Theatre Association of St. Louis, received the 2025 Regional Theatre Tony Award, and teacher Gary Edwin Robinson of Brooklyn received the Excellence in Theatre Education Award.
Broadway is coming off the biggest season in its long history. Total grosses of $1.89 billion surpassed the previous – and pre-Covid – record-holding 2018-19 season’s $1.82 billion, according to statistics released late last month by the Broadway League.
