UPDATE, with other cancellations: The Book of Mormon has canceled its matinee and evening performances today, joining The Lion King and Aladdin in skipping shows today due to New York’s freezing, snowy weather conditions.
Earlier today, Mormon had hoped to persevere, posting on social media, “Snow day, show day! Both of today’s performances of The Book of Mormon (matinee and evening) will perform as scheduled. Need last minute seats? Get 2-for-1 or upgraded Broadway Week tickets…”
But shortly before the 2 p.m. matinee, the production changed course, writing on its website that both the 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. performances had been cancelled.
Also newly surrendering to the winter storm are M.J., the Michael Jackson show giving up its 3 p.m. matinee, and Ragtime, which posted on Instagram that “due to inclement weather today’s performance of Ragtime has been cancelled.”
Watch on Deadline
Earlier on a snowy New York morning, most Broadway productions were expecting to tough out the state-of-emergency weather, with only a couple productions (Disney’s The Lion King and Aladdin) officially canceling Sunday performances at that time, a situation that prompted some actors to express chilliness to the news.
Late Saturday night, The Broadway League, the trade organization representing theater owners and producers, posted an Instagram message saying that “most Broadway shows in New York City are currently scheduled to perform tomorrow (Sunday) as planned,” news that some performers thought was pretty cold.
“Hey @nycmayor @govkathyhochul can you please tell the Broadway league that there’s a literal STATE OF EMERGENCY and it’s not safe to be forcing the thousands of theatre workers (and ticket holders who can’t cancel because of fine print) to come to shows??” wrote Jenna Bainbridge. who plays Nessarose in Wicked.
Bainbridge’s castmate Danny Quadrino, who plays Boq, wrote, “The health and safety of your theatre workers should be at the forefront.”
Telly Leung, who plays one of the Phantoms in the immersive off-Broadway Phantom of the Opera reboot Masquerade, responded to the League’s post with, “@nycmayor. I am urging you to step in here. Theater workers are human beings who deserve to be safe in this weather emergency as well. @broadwayleague – I am urging you to do the right thing today for the safety of your workers and patrons.”
As of this writing — the situation, of course, could change as the snow mounts and temperatures drop — only five Broadway shows have canceled Sunday performances: Both The Lion King and Aladdin note on their officials websites that Sunday performances are axed, with the shows resuming performances, as already scheduled, on Tuesday. Tickets for today’s shows will be refunded.
With subways and buses running, Broadway as a whole rarely shuts down due to weather. The last industry-wide closing due to snow was 10 years ago, when a Jan. 23, 2016, blizzard brought more than two feet of snow to the city.
Off Broadway, Heathers: The Musical has canceled today’s matinee and evening performances “out of concern for the safety of cast, company and audiences,” the production wrote in a press release. As is standard, ticket holders for canceled performances should return to point of purchase for exchanges or refunds. Another Off Broadway production to cancel was The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, dropping both its matinee and evening performances.
Other shows are pledging to tough out today’s expected eight inches of white stuff. Broadway’s Bug, the Manhattan Theatre Club offering, starring Carrie Coon and Namir Smallwood, announced a $45 flash sale for all remaining seats for today’s 2pm matinee due to the storm. The musical Two Strangers Carry a Cake Across New York posted an Instagram message saying, “Don’t be a stranger! Warm up with us today at 3PM,” and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child wrote on Instagram, “Escape the snow! Performances are ON for today!”
“The Queens are reigning at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.,” writes the musical Six. “Get down at the castle, raise your voice and warm up with Six The Musical.” Chess writes, “Game on,” noting that the 3pm matinee will go on as scheduled. Stranger Things: The First Shadow has a note on its website reading, “Both performances will play as scheduled on Sunday, January 25, 2026. If you have any questions, please contact your original point of purchase for assistance.”
Oh, Mary! writes on Instagram, “ATTN: all snowmen, ice bastards, etc. Both performances of OH, MARY! on Sunday, January 25 are currently scheduled to continue as planned.” Buena Vista Social Club plans to stay on schedule for its matinee, too, as does Operation Mincemeat, Oedipus, and most other Broadway productions.
Ticket holders are strongly advised to check the individual websites and Instagram pages of the various shows for updates.
Had to go the 3 pm matinee or lose $400.00 in ticket price. Unbelievable that the new leadership at Roundabout Theater didn’t make the call to keep their theater workers, but also the PAYING PUBLIC that pays their $300,000.00 Artistic Director’s salary safe during a declared State Of Emergency. The ‘Audience Helpline’? What a joke. Called it 5 times before the show and got no response. Unbelievable greed by this theater and board of directors. Gonna lose LOTS of subscribers after this one.
Broadway rarely closes, as long as transportation is up and running. The show must go on. You should have thought about the weather in January before you bought your ticket.
