The LAPD plans to present its conclusions in the killing of Rob and Michele Reiner to the L.A. County District Attorney’s office tomorrow. At the same time, with the director’s son Nick Reiner in custody for murder, the police have changed the suspect’s status to no bail.
“As a result of the initial investigation, it was determined that the Reiners were the victims of homicide, the LAPD said Monday of the probe into the December 14 death of the 78-year-old A Few Good Men helmer and his 68-year-old spouse. The Reiners were found in their Brentwood home by their daughter and another individual around 3:30 pm PT Sunday. Both bodies were discovered with multiple stab wounds, according to law enforcement sources.
“The investigation further revealed that Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of Robert and Michele Reiner, was responsible for their deaths,” said the cops today. “Nick Reiner was located and arrested at approximately 9:15 p.m. He was booked for murder and remains in custody with no bail. On Tuesday, December 16, 2025, the case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration.”
This morning the L.A. Sheriff’s department had Nick Reiner in custody, but with a $4 million bail. Clearly that is no longer the case in this high-profile and tragic matter.
L.A. DA Nathan Hochman’s office had no comment on fast-moving events when contacted by Deadline. An arraignment is expected soon.
A well-positioned law enforcement source said it is likely the younger Reiner will be charged with something like a double homicide. If found guilty, in California, that could lead to a sentence of life without parole — similar to what the Menendez brothers received.
DEADLINE RELATED VIDEO:
Earlier Monday, as Hollywood and America absorbed the terrible deaths, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell confirmed at an unrelated press conference hat the Robbery Homicide division is running point on the case, and the younger Reiner has been “booked for murder.”
Nick Reiner is one of Rob and Michele Reiner’s three children. He also has an adopted half-sister from his father’s previous marriage to Penny Marshall. Nick had recently moved back into his parents’ home, according to sources.
The younger Reiner has been very open in the past about his struggles with addiction. The 2015 film Being Charlie, co-written by Nick and directed by his father was loosely based on Nick’s experience with addiction. The elder Reiner has said the experience brought the two of them closer together.

On Sunday, the Los Angeles Fire Department received an urgent call of an “incident” at the Reiner home, located on the 200 block of South Chadbourne Avenue, at about 3:38 p.m. PT Sunday. Authorities described the situation as a “family incident.” Very quickly, the LAPD was also on the scene and soon afterwards news of the tragedy became known, as the Reiners’ neighborhood was cordoned off.
They need to take life without parole off the table and bring in the death penalty.
I don’t think that Rob Reiner would want that. But life without parole seems fitting and better for society.
Excellent. That solves everything.
